I am having a problem with the windows update. I get this program to install
successfully but when I check the updates it is still showing me that it sill
needs to be installed. If anyone can help me with this problem, I would
greatly appreciate it. I have tried many of the suggestions posted but none
have worked for me so far

Hi Robert--

That's the 'reliability update':
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194

Maybe it isn't installed, even if WU or MU said it's installed. By
associating the term "program" with update I assume you menat to call an
update an update.

That would mean you're saying you tried to install KB938194, got a
successful install message, and are still being prompted to install.

Check to see it's really installed--I assume it's listed in Windows Update.

Downloads a great free program at www.belarc.com (The Advisor) and it will
list not only your hdw and software, but applications and updates installed.
It's another check.

If you verify it's in, then run sfc and maybe it will stop the redundant
message:

***SFC as a Remedy***:

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a
backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat
and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.

How to Run SFC:

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

Good luck,

CH

I can't run sfc/scannow because it says I need to be an administator, I'm
the only account and I am the administator.

No, you aren't THE Administrator. That is disabled in a default
installation of Vista. Do a search for "enable Administrator account" in
the forum or Google. Once you have THE Administrator account enabled, it'll
show up on your Welcome screen, and you can log in that account to do all of
your administrative duties.

Hello Sam,

Type cmd in the start/search box, then when the command prompt (cmd.exe)
appears in the list above, right-click on it and select 'Run as
Administrator'.
