Do you have an available Restore Point that predates the install of 938828? Are you (still) getting STOP 0xc0000005 errors? Were you getting this STOP error (or other STOP errors) before you reinstalled WinXP? Did you reinstall the appropriate Dell drivers, too? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Lost and Wandering wrote: > I had a crash on the PC and had to re-instal Windows XP Pro (using the > disk > obtained from DELL). Are you positive that KB938828 is indeed, installed ? Check the Version
of explorer.exe, please. If it's at V. 6.0.2900.3156, then the update is installed. According to the log you posted, the uninstall file is present on the system. Are you stating the update is causing a race condition and that it can not be uninstalled ? > c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB938828\spuninst.exe MowGreen [MVP 2003-2008] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== Lost and Wandering wrote: > I had a crash on the PC and had to re-instal Windows XP Pro (using the disk > obtained from DELL). Hi MowGreen,
Thanks for responding. I have checked the version of explorer and it is V.6.0.2900.3156. The update must be installed. I don't know what you mean about a race condition but this is what happens: From KB938828 File in c:\windows\$hf_mig$\ Double clicking spuninst.exe gives me the following error message: The application failed to start because UPDSPAPI.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem. I've tried re-installing but this doesn't work. Going to the update file within the folder and double clicking on update.exe gives the following error message: Setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system. Under windows all the updates I have put on the system are listed in number order (i.e. NtUninstallKB........) but KB938828 isn’t there, neither is the update showing in Control Panel to allow me to uninstall. At this point I was a bit lost..........Any ideas???????? "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote: > Are you positive that KB938828 is indeed, installed ? Check the Version > of explorer.exe, please. Hi PA Bear,
Thanks for the response. I tried going back to the earliest restore point I had (this is a new machine, 4 weeks old, that I crashed when installing some of my photo software .... all traces of the offending software are gone but I had to re-install windows ... three days up and running then my first crash). This restore point doesn't work. I think that this update is installed on the system but I can't find an original date of installation to go back before it. It's not an 0xc00 code I'm getting, it's always 0x00, but, yes this still happens on exit. The system just seems a bit unstable while I'm in (nothing I can put my finger on). I re-installed all the relevant DELL drivers and have used the dell support to scan the machine .... it comes back ok. This has driven me nuts for weeks until I am now at this stage. Any help would be appreciated. It doesn't correct the problem or you can't use it? The update CAN NOT be uninstalled from the $hf_mig$ folder because the
uninstall exe is intended for the QFE branch of the update. What is installed is known as the GDR branch. This is where the uninstall should be done from: 105.812: CreateUninstall = 0,Directory = C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB938828$ As to why the $NtUninstallKB938828$ is not present ... not sure what to tell you except that the only recourse would be to boot to the Recovery Console and then extract the copy of explorer.exe from the XP CD and replace the current version: How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 Replace explorer.exe in WINDOWS and in WINDOWS\system32\dllcache A race condition is what is described in the KB938828 article. " CAUSE This problem occurs because of a race condition in the Explorer.exe process. Some antivirus applications and some print applications use notification balloons to display messages. These applications may cause a race condition. Therefore, the Explorer.exe process crashes.
