KB940157 failure with 0x643 error code

Windows XP with all updates.
Windows Search 4.0 can't remove the 3.0 version so it will not install but
3.0 works fine. However, when I try to uninstall using Add & Remove Programs,
I get a message like "this only works for installed programs."
Terminal Services is "running" and I checked various other threads for the
answer without success.

PA Bear's answer did not address my problem. I'd already stated that Terminal
Services was running. Sorry but I still need help. Thanks.

Try reinstallling 3.0 first.

I just tried reinstalling Search 3.0. It was "successful." Then running the
update I got the same result; i.e., 4.0 said it could not uninstall 3.0. I
tried uninstalling 3.0 and was told again "this only works for installed
programs."

I am still puzzled.

Is there a Repair option for Search 3.0 in Add/Remove Programs?
