KB940157 Install Fails with Error Code 0x05

I am running XP Professional (x64) with service pack 2 installed. I have
tried to install (via Microsoft Update) KB940157, Windows Search 4.0,
multiple times with no success. It always fails with Error Code: 0x05. I have
also tried downloading the update and installing it manually as well.

I suspect it's a problem with access permissions because in the install log
all the failures are on attempts to access various registry keys. However, I
am installing as administrotor so I wouln't have thought permissions would be
a problem...apparently I was wrong.

Do you have an earlier version of Windows Desktop Search still installed?
If so, which version?

You told us more in the other thread, Todd:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...e4d8adbd578ec3

What other updates are failing to install, Todd (e.g., Microsoft XML Core
Services 4.0)? Does WindowsUpdate.log (or the installation log for the
update-in-question) give any other Error numbers?

How long have you been having problems installing Windows Updates?

=====================
Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

No, this is the first time installing Search.

Everthing else installs fine.

I tried to attach the log to the message and got an error message saying the
post was too long. I'll try again.

This is the first time having trouble.

Now that you mention it, I did just install Comodo Firewall. I'll try
disabling and/or uninstalling it and see what happens.

Thanks,

I beg to differ:

See
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...a1ad529fa3c9d7

Also...

<QP>
Ok, actually, after a more careful review of the install log there were a
LOT
of failures earlier on in the log and they were all failures to access
various registry keys.... Sounds like a permissions thing....maybe?

Just examine WindowsUpdate.log for other Error codes & tell me what you may
find.

If you disable or uninstall Comodo firewall, make CERTAIN that you enable
the Windows Firewall!
