I keep getting the error code 80073712 when trying to install these updates,
either together or seperately, and have been unable to find any info on the
microsoft sites to resolve this.

Any one got any ideas?

Hi there, you forgot to mention what OS you're using - assuming it's Vista -

80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT.
Windows Update file corruption.

Delete the file pending.xml under C:\windows\winsxs

and/or

Reinstall the Windows Update Agent - Click one of the following links as
appropriate for the operating system.

x86-based versions of Windows - download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
package now.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

x64-based versions of Windows - download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe
package now.

TaurArian,

Thank you for the help, but neith solution has worked.
I am running x86 Vista, with AVG anti virus, and windows firewall.

Any further suggestions would be most appreciated.

The only other thing I can think of is that there may be corruption in the
softwaredistribution folder and/or temporary internet cache. Try renaming the
softwaredistribution folder and clearing the Temporary internet files and try again.

Also check to make sure that your virus scanning program isn't scanning the
softwaredistribution folder (see article at end of posting - it's for WinXP but you'll get
the idea)

Otherwise - You'll have to start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

FYI - How to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder in Vista -
1. Stop the Windows Update service (make sure you are logged on as an Administrator)

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Stop.

2. Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

Locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder.

3. Start the Windows Update service

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Start.

This procedure will erase your history on the Windows Update Site. Not important.

You shouldn't be running an anit-virus app when installing an update.
Doing so could account for your symptom (corruption of files and
incomplete installation.)

Notice that if you do the download and installation phases separately
you don't even need to be connected to the Internet for the latter,
so there is really no need for any kind of third-party security software
to be in effect then whereas stopping them minimizes the chance of
updates failing due to their interference.
