I have spoken with Microsoft Support on the problem with the KB941649 update
not installing correctly. The technical support engineer stated that
Microsoft has a fix but has not released it to the public yet.

I don't know if this will help all experiencing this problem, but it fixed it
for me. I contacted Microsoft Tech Support and the tech found a problem in my
WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation). File WMIUTILS.DLL was "not
registered". The tech re-registered it and the upldate download was
successfully installed. No more "double reboot" and no more notifications
that I needed to install the download.

Was wmiutils.dll registered from an Elevated Command Prompt or from the
Run line ?

Specific details pertaining to Vista were not posted, Harry.
I'd suggest you attempt to do it from an Elevated Command Prompt -
Click Start > type cmd in the Start Search box > right-click cmd in the
Programs list, and then click 'Run as administrator'.

User Account Control permission: If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click
Continue if no password is in use.

At the Command Prompt type the following in, *pressing Enter* after each
command:

regsvr32 wmiutils.dll
exit

Restart the system and see if KB941649 installs now.

The Microsoft Tech did my "re-registration" remotely, I have no idea how as
am not that computer literate but he did use the elevated Command Prompt. It
is now December 14 and I have had no recurrence of the problem, plus, new
Windows Updates have downloaded properly with no issues.

After many tries i just solved this problem by downloading the update
directly from Microsoft and installing it. NOT using auto update. Here is the
page you need
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

I had 7 updates that would install but NOT configure. After installing
KB941649 from the site above it showed up as successful in history and I used
auto update to install the other 6 and they worked fine. It seems the
KB941649 update was screwing up the works. Autoupdate still didn't know and
was trying to send KB941649 to me again so I "HID" KB941649. So glad to be
moving on. My autoupdates now says my computer is up to date and no updates
available at this time. I hope this works for you too.
