Please help me!
I'm new to computers, but I've tried to maintain my PC by scanning daily
(Norton AntiVirus) and making sure I have all the latest MS updates. However,
now I'm freaking out because my computer is acting very strange!

(My OS: Windows XP Pro SP2.)

Here's the first of my problems:
About 4 days ago, Automatic Updates tried to install KB943985, KB947355,
KB945432, KB947944 (all pertaining to MS Office Pro Edition 2003) but I got
this message:
"The Feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder
containing the installation package 'PRO11.MSI' in the box below."
I didn't know what to do, so I went to the MS Updates Help section. It seems
as though the Office program was installed incorrectly; however, I don't have
the original discs for the program (I bought my laptop used). How can I
possibly install these updates???

After this unsuccessful installation, my computer shut down two days later.
I got a warning message that said something may have corrupted Windows. After
many failed attempts to log on to Windows, I finally did and ran
"error-checking". My screen had this info: "File record segment 5----is
unreadable" (there were forty-some messages like this).

I also ran the "Pre-boot Diagnostics" and got this info:
Device: Hard Drive
Test: DST Short Status Test
Status: Error Detected
Error code: 1000_0143

*SORRY if I supplied too much or not enough info, or if I supplied
irrelevant info...I've never posted here before & I don't know much about
computers.*

Please help! I'm so scared and desperate!

Thanks for you help in advance...

It's me, Szymanowski again. I needed to add more info.:

Just in case anyone was wondering, I did get both my Windows & Office
programs validated on the MS website (I was starting to think that perhaps my
copies were not authentic, but -knock on wood- it's all valid and legal.)

However, now that I reread my receipt, I bought my laptop with no warranty
on the OS or software. How on earth am I supposed to fix this problem??
Yesterday, I took a chance & signed-in as an Admin., went on the 'net and
tried to download the Panda scan program, but my computer just shut off - it
also shut off whenever I tried to download or run a program that could help
"fix" or clean-up my laptop (IE-Spyad/Zone, & another prog. I can't remember
the name). So now I'm afraid to sign-in as an Administrator....but when I
sign on as a "Guest", I can't get on the internet!

I apologize for going on about this, but I'm truly about to lose it and I
don't know what to do!!!!! HELP!!!!

HELLO?? Thanks for all the help...NOT. This is the first (& last time) I ask
for advice on this forum (and to the person who said my last post was not
"helpful": I was the one asking for help...sheesh)

I had this same problem. I found that the problem was that I disabled the
"Office Source Engine" service. I re-enabled and started the service
according to the instructions in the office help file: C:\Program Files
(x86)\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\SETUP.CHM )

After restarting the service, I ran Windows Update and it once again failed
to install the updates, so I downloaded the "manual" install files for each
of these updates from http://download.microsoft.com (I found them by
searching for the "kb" number of each update). The manual installers worked
fine, and my system is now up to date.

Hope this helps!

I also had the same problem just yesterday. For some unclear reason, during
the original installation, the "Office Source Engine" service was set for
manual (and was not started) instead of automatic. I set it to automatic and
started the service so I won't run into this problem again. Thanks for the
tip.
