KB943985 MS Office Excel 2003 Update fails with error code 779

This happens on Windows Vista Business machine using Microsoft Update. It is
the first time I have had an Office 2003 update fail.

Any thoughs would be appriciated.

I have also tried to install Office 2003 Service Pack 3 and Security update
(KB943988)v2 and Outlook KB943649 and everyone of these updates fails to
install. Any one have any suggestions?

I had simlar to this 10 times - I turned off my 3rd. party firewall and and
anti-virus, turned on the Windows firewall and the next download attempt
worked fine.

You have to change the SACL of %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\mapisvc.inf. Take
ownership for the group Administrators and grant the permission to
change for Administrators. Then retry the installation of the Patch.

You mean the DACL, I presume? The DACL contains the permissions that control
access to an object, the SACL controls auditing.

This was the straw that broke the camel's back... I am NOT an engineer, but
an end-user - and repeated attempts at getting this fixed once and for all,
pushed me towards the "other camp". I had to buy new Desktops and Laptop
anyway, so I took the plunge and said goodbye MS, Vista and everything else
MS... I am happy about my decision, even though I know I will be facing a
steep uphill with learning a completely new OS - with all the bugs included,
of course... So far... knock on wood - all seems to work... Garage sale
coming up, with a couple of darn nice PCs...
