Why? If she does that, she'll have to update her Office and most Windows
Live applications manually. While the former can be done with relative ease
via Office Updates website, keeping the latter updated might prove an
onerous task for anyone.

The blog entry I cited mentions nothing whatsoever about changes to AU
settings.
The most recent MU blog entry about supposedly unexpected changes to AU
settings is

[From what I've read about this, most users who claimed their AU settings
had been changed "without their permission" had in fact recently installed
Windows Live OneCare which will configure AU to "Automatic" by default. The
user can still reconfigure AU, though OneCare may protest about it.]
