KB949074 Update Problem

On Thursday, 12/11/08, I was offered a number of Microsoft updates by the
monthly update service. After the installation I went to the Office Update
site, which offered Office Update KB949074. When I tried to install, it
fails. Downloading the file manually made no difference; it will not install
that way either complaining that it can't detect that Office 2003 is
installed on the machine with the specific message "The expected version of
the product was not found on your system." It seems a bit strange the update
is being offered at all since I have Office Professional 2007 installed on
both computers.

I went to the Microsoft Update site; it does not offer KB949074 update.
However a check at the Office Update says I need it even though it can't
install. This is happening on two computers both running Windows
Professional SP2 with all updates and SP3 with all updates.



Reading through the message regarding this problem is appears there is an
issue with this latest update.

Apparently, none of the above conditions exist on the system so the
update is not needed. Since others are also reporting this issue about
the Office Update site, it's most likely the detection logic of OU that
needs some tweaking.

Will there be an update to the update logic? I attempted to install the
update by hand and a message stating "The Update cannot be applied."
resulted. Also Windows XP keeps asking me to update on Shutown, becuase
Windows' Automatic Update can not intall this update either.

When can a fix be expected?

We have chosen NOT to install update KB949074 at this time due to the
significant volume of reported failures on a variety of different systems
(Office XP, XP, Vista). At issue is Microsoft's claim that this is not a
security update so support is not free. If it is not a security update and
therefore without support should it fail, and our users are running problem
free without the update, then I feel confident we can continue to live
without the update until such a time that Microsoft upgrades its priority and
opens up support to those encountering problems. We'll revisit this again at
that time.

I get the same message when attempting to do it manually (update cannot be
applied). I wonder how we get it off the list to update so we can stop seeing
install updates and shut down?!

Was the update offered via Automatic Updates, Windows or Microsoft
Update sites, or in Vista, Windows Updates ?
Which edition of Windows is installed ?

You can stop the update service and then delete all the contents of
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download in any edition of Windows, if so
desired.
Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter.

You'll need to show hidden files, folders, and system files, the method
varies according to the edition of Windows installed:

Now delete *all* contents of the Download subfolder of
SoftwareDistribution.
Then, either restart the system which will Start the update service or,
via Start > Run , run this command

net start wuauserv

If you are subsequently prompted to install the update, it can't install
because it's no longer present. If you are notified that it's available
for download or, it's been downloaded once again [this will depend on
what setting has been chosen for automatic updating], UNcheck the box
next to the update, click OK, and choose the Hide this update .... option.
