After the automated install of the KB951748 hotfix, my computer displays a
blank screen when Windows tries to start, and freezes. For example, when I
press Caps Lock, the light doesn't toggle, and there are no events in any
EventLog. The computer was in this state for roughly 8 hours before I came
in today. I needed to turn the power off. If I start Windows with the "last
known configuration" everything is fine. I do NOT have Zone Alarm. I do
have MS Developer Studio 2005 and Symantec AntiVirus, which are the only
programs I can think of that do anything weird. Any ideas?

Windows version?

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB915748).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Thanks, I'll start an incident request. Silly me: it's XP professional.

That update is also blocking internet access - go into control panel -
add/remove programs - click on show updates - look for that number click on
it and remove it - which operating system do you have - in XP it's add/remove
programs - in Vista it's called Programs and Features - look to the left and
you will see View installed updates - click on it - to see installed updates
find the number and remove it - also change your Windows Update setting so
that updates do not get installed automatically this way you can keep a note
of which updates want to be installed - also when your are finished using
your computer at the end of the day click on start - turn off computer -
never leave a computer running 24/7 - a power surge of any kind can fry the
motherboard - "Hope this helps you" PS - those programs you mention will not
do anything - this update was a Windows Update - not a virus or spyware -
