KB956390 will not install

Hi,

I had a Windows update problem with a .NET Framework update (that I won't go
into as it is not germane to this inquiry) that, in the end, I could not
resolve. So after a week or so I decided to invest the time in a complete
recovery and reload Windows (XP Home) and all application software from
scratch, with a clean install.

Progress to date involved product recovery from the recovery partition on
the hard disk, uninstallation of a lot of useless bloatware that came with
the computer (HP Pavilion 505n), and getting Windows XP Home updated. I have
not yet loaded any other software and the machine is therefore in "virgin"
status, so I don't think there can be anything else interfering. The Windows
updates loaded smoothly, but after getting though Service Pack 3 I had one
update that for some reason just will not install. I have tried several
times but get the same message that KB956390 has not been installed.

I think this is a Security update so I want to get it installed.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

Thanks

Engel. Thanks. Microsoft Product Support Services just told me to call HP,
so unfortunately that didn't resolve things. I read through your other post
but could not see that it helps me with this problem. I think I'll just
start over, reformat the hard drive again, and see if it works this time.

Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

Do you have the case number for this?

Security issues are not supposed to be pawned off to OEM support.

I do not have a case number for this. I was looking for help and just called
the phone number suggested by Engel for Microsoft assistance with security
update problems. I explained my security update problem to the agent, who
said he said he could not help and that I should call HP.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Otherwise, you can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB956390).

LOOK!! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue
(which is 47830).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

PAB. Thanks for responding to my inquiry and the suggestions. Tried the
crystal ball but no luck this time. Eventually elected to invest a few hours
and clean install everything from scratch, vs. more back and forth with MS
agents and no assurance of a satisfying solution. All Window updates now
accepted and installed, including the ones I've had trouble with, and all
software apparently functioning properly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
