Vista Home Premium, sp1

KB956500, Security Update for MS Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 keeps
getting offered.

According to Update History, it failed to install once, then
successfully installed 3 times.

However, when I decided to try to uninstall it and start over again, I
found that it isn't listed in "Installed Updates."

Should I uninstall the PP2003 Viewer, then re-download and install it?

In addition to the PP2003 Viewer, I have Office 2007, including PP2007
installed, and for some reason also have the PP2007 Viewer installed
(don't recall doing that).

Solved.

There was no indication that this update wouldn't be installed until
shutdown (until I actually shut down the computer).

If you have PP 2007 installed, why do you still have PP Viewer 2003
installed (which, BTW, is no longer supported)?

Wrote too soon. There was an update installed on shutdown, but on
rebooting I still had the original problem.

I uninstalled PP Viewer 2003, re-downloaded and re-installed it.

Went back to Windows Update and KB956500 was offered again. I clicked
install, a restore point was automatically created, and the install was
reported to be successful. It is still not listed in Installed Updates.

Powered off and got the "Windows is installing 1 update" message.

Powered on and went back to Windows Update. Update History now shows 6
"successful" installs and one failed install of KB956500. Installed
Updates doesn't list it. And Windows Update still wants to install it.

Windows again installs "update 1 of 1" on power off, even though I
didn't click on "install updates" at WU this time. This happens
repeatedly on successive power off/on cycles. In addition, after
Windows supposedly finishes installing the update, the "Shutting down"
procedure takes a long time.

How do I get this "Security Update" to actually install and get WU to
stop offering it?
