There appears to be something special about KB956572 such that it always
fails to install even though every other update succeeds. It has failed to
install 10 times since March 12, 2010, always with a 0x80072EFD error.
Today, for example, KB956572 failed but these updates succeeded: KB978601,
KB981349, KB890830, KB976323, KB979683, KB978338, KB979309, KB977816,
KB980232. What is special about KB956572 that it always fails? I am running
XP SP3, 1.86GHZ, 3.0 GB RAM. Any ideas?

Did you try downloading the update and executing it with parameter "/o"?
See <http://google.com/groups?selm=> for
details.

Why is an update from March of 2009 being offered to your system in
April 2010 ?

KB979683, which installed successfully, contains a more recent Version
of the Kernel than KB956572 does, which is why it will not install.
And, the error message, 0x80072EFD, indicates that there's a
communication issue with the update servers, yet, the other updates
downloaded and installed successfully.

You may find that you will have to uninstall KB979683, reboot, and then
install KB956572 first, reboot, and then install KB979683, and reboot
once again.

That does ***not*** sound right. ***Strongly suggest*** that you use the
links that Ǝиçεl posted to contact Microsoft for *** no-charge ***
support in getting this straightened out.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

What result do you get after running the Fix It here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980966 ?
