KB958215 Problem - New Computer

I have a new computer setup w/
Windows XP Professional
2002
SP3
I do not have any anti-virus software installed yet.

In the windows update, it fails to install
KB958215.

The update history shows that when the computer was built, the
update failed to install. It continues to fail both in the update
gadget and also when I try to install it manually.

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks.

Don't delay it and ensure the build-in firewall application is activated!
(Your os may already be compromised by malware).

What does that mean? Is it a brand-new computer or, e.g., a rebuilt
computer that's new to you?

Are you running IE6 or IE7 (or perchance IE8 RC1)?

Why not? How long has the machine been connected to the internet without
anti-virus protection?

Who built the computer and first tried to install KB958215? If you didn't
build it, why did you purchase it if a critical security update failed to
install?

What errors are associated with the failed attempts to install KB958215 in
WindowsUpdate.log?

The computer was built (brand new) by a computer-builder/vendor that
supplies to UIUC. It is running IE7. I did not know anything about the
failed MS install until it got on my doorstep and I did my own update check.
I have put VirusScan 8.5 on the computer and did a full scan - no viruses.
Yes, i t was connected to the internet (for only ~3 hrs before spotting the
failed install). Computer was built and setup w/ XP Pro SP3 on Friday and
fired up by me on Sat when I first posted here. This is about my 40th
computer purchase, so I'm not new to computers ... but I am new to having a
failed KB install. To be clear, the failed KB958215 occurred (repeatedly)
before any anti-virus was on, and it failed during the build by the vendor.

The above appears to be contradictory to...

....unless you only found out about the latter after taking delivery of the
machine.

Personally, I would return the machine to the vendor and demand a full
refund.

That being said, the 0x8007F0F1 error (STATUS_INCOMPARABLE_BRANCHES)
suggests that the vendor installed a beta or Release Candidate version of
SP3 and/or IE7:

1. Start | Run | (type) winver | OK

Write down then post the second line displayed in the resulting applet
[e.g., Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_xxx.1234567-8901 : Service Pack 3].

2. IE Help | About: What version is displayed here (e.g., v7.0.1234.56)?

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 : Service Pack 3)
IE7: Version: 7.0.5730.13

I'm not sure what I said that was inconsistent below.
When check for updates, it was clear from the history that the vendor was
the first to have KB958215 fail. After I got it and found that it, I've been
now for the last day trying to get it to install ... only by repeating is and
also by downloading and running it as an exe file.

Thanks.

Thanks. Neither are beta builds. Now, why that
STATUS_INCOMPARABLE_BRANCHES error?

The fact that the computer was used online, however briefly, without being
fully patched and without anti-virus protection could be related to the
problem.

Important! => Can you confirm that "Security Update for Windows Internet
Explorer 7 (960714)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs? If it isn't, you may
have a hijackware infection on your hands!

Otherwise, you can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB958215).

LOOK!!! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE
(e.g., KB958215), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the
"Consumer IE queue" (which is 47830).

I would strongly recommend getting this issue resolved ASAP. We expect a
new Cumulative Security Update for IE to be released on 10 Feb-09!

Would you mind posting the *last* ~30 lines of the "KB958215.log" file
which is to be found in the Windows folder?

Start -> Run -> notepad %windir%\KB958215.log [Enter/OK]

You did reboot your Windows in the meantime, did you?

Bye,
Freudi
