Automatic Updates has downloaded this update but it has failed to install 4
times. Twice with auto update and twice at Windows Update site. I have
Silverlight installed and cannot uninstall it. I get a fatal error. What am I
supposed to do to solve this problem?

Thank you for the link PA.
I still cannot find out/remember why or how this Silverlight was installed a
few weeks ago - I keep kidding myself that senility is not creeping in, but
it must be using the back door.
I have checked the hidden folder in WU Home, and I see that another update
for Silverlight had been hidden - so I did not need/want it before.
At the moment I am trying to figure out if I want/ need this software, by
reading the site info.

This happened to me too. It also happened at the last Silverlight update. In
my case, the problem was with the Quicken PDF printer. Quicken uses an Amyuni
PDF driver as can be seen by examining the printers. The problem is that
Silverlight tries to reinstall these and Quicken's install gives an error
that the printer name is unacceptable. You can see this if you install the
update and then look at the logfile in "Program
Files/Quicken/PDFDrv/Install.log" or wherever you installed Quicken. The
error causes a dialog box to come up (invisibly if the update is installed on
shutdown) and since that requires an "OK" response the update does not
completely finish. It appears as successful in the Update History, but does
not appear in the "Add and Remove Programs". That is why Update keeps trying.

The only solid way I found to completely install the update was to first
uninstall Quicken, then install the update and then reinstall Quicken. This
takes a while and is a pain. since it happens every time SilverLight is
updated, i wish someone would fix this (probably on the Quicken end of
things).

Alternatively, one can go to the Microsoft Windows Update page, select
Custom updates, and then, when the list appears, deselect KB960353
Silverlight and also check the box that says don't load the update again.
That will hide it and hopefully it won't try again. The Quicken PDF driver
code will have been updated as you can see from the dates in the Quicken
PDFDrv folder. I don't know if Silverlight itself got updated but i wouldn't
be surprised if it had.

The link to the Quicken PDF directory is from the registry where it uses the
inf file to start things I believe.

There is a restorePdfDriver.bat file that simply sets up the printer again
using the drivers and install exe in the folder. When I ran that I could see
from the log file that the printer install worked. But it does not seem to
work when running from under the update installation.

I imagine that someone could write an install.exe file to do nothing and
temporarily put it in place of the one in the PDFDrv folder. Then perhaps the
update would work. After that one could run the retore bat file to get the
Quickn PDF printer back to good shape. This is just a theory and it would
still be a manual fix.

You must work for the Government or Microsoft (yeah..joke here) as your
answer may be totally truthful, but contains absolutely NO relevant
information..... All i get from your link is yet ANOTHER list of folks who
cant get this crap to work..... How about a FIX and a STRAIGHT answer
instead of some BS link to another list of BS answers??? HMMMMM....

BTW.. Tell Bill I said hey... met him in CLT when he came down

The link was of no help whatsoever. I found people having the same problem
and they found no solution either. I restored my computer to the day before
the update and went to Microsoft Update site and chose to "Hide" the
Silverlight update. THAT solved my problem. I don't want updates that DON'T
WORK!
Thanks,

I don't have and never have had the Quicken PDF printer. I'm glad you were
able to solve your problem though.

YES!!
I used the WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEAN UP UTILITY a second time, reading the
readme file carefully and it worked! My old version of Silverlight is GONE!
I'm going to wait a few days and try to install the newest version.
Hopefully, all will go well.

Still unable to get Silverlite to work. (Running XP on HP Media center PC
m7664x)The fix was to uninstall the old silverlite, and install the new. I
was only able to get one part of the old to uninstall. Now no joy. Unable
to reinstall the new edition, or uninstall the old.
