Running Vista Home Premium which has been kept up to date with all current
patches.

Update offers these two updates but the install fails with the following
error messages:

8007490 and 80073712 although I can't figure out which update and which
error code are linked.

Anyone able to help?

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1) when posting to
this newsgroup.

80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT

Assuming SP1 is not installed:

Error message when you try to install updates from the Windows Update or
Microsoft Update Web site: "0x80073712":

Thanks for your reply.

The version is Vista SP1 and I have now tried the steps suggested in the
link you supplied including running Checksure.exe however there is no
difference and I still can't get either of these updates to install. I have
also visited the MS site and tried a manual install of both but get the same
error messages.

Is there anything else I can try?

John, neither KB960544 not KB957000 are security updates so you do not
qualify for free (Windows Update) support. Your answers to the following
questions will help me diagnose your problem:

Did Vista SP1 come preinstall on the machine when you bought it, did you
install Vista SP1 via Windows Update, or did you choose to install SP1
manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed SP1, if you installed it?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

The PC is a Packard Bell and came with Vista and SP1 pre-installed. It also
had a trial version of Norton Security installed which I removed as soon as
possible and replaced with the McAfee product that is supplied as part of my
ISP package all of which is up to date. This includes Anti-virus, Firewall
and Spyware Protection.

I also have a laptop running the same McAfee configuration and both the
updates installed fine on it.

Thanks for your help so far and I hope this info is what you need to help me
further.

1. Download this removal tool, saving it to your desktop:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

2. Right-click on the saved download and select Run as Administrator.

3. Reboot.

Do your problems persist now?

I have downloaded and run this and the problem still remains. I also tried
switching off the current software but the problems are still there.

See this page: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Do the three steps but do them as follows:

1. Download the McAfee removal tool to your desktop, like you did before.

2. Physically disconnect the machine from the internet and any networks
(router).

3. Uninstall McAfee Security Center.

4. Enable the Windows Firewall!

5. Right-click on the removal tool you saved in #1 above and select Run as
Administrator; reboot twice after the tool completes.

6. Making certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled, reconnect to the
internet and download/reinstall McAfee Security Center from your ISP.

7. Reboot & make certain that the Windows Firewall is *disabled* and the
McAfee Firewall is *enabled*.

8. Manually update McAfee Security Center until you get a "no more updates"
prompt.

If still no joy & assuming the machine's still under Warranty or Service
Contract, contact Packard Bell (hp) Support.

NB: If they instruct you to reinstall Vista, the Norton free-trial may
reinstall. Before replacing it with McAfee Security Center, uninstall the
Norton app, run the Norton removal tool again & reboot twice.

Good luck!

Followed all of these steps and still get the same error messages. If these
updates aren't critical or security related I think it's time to give up!
Not sure I want to go through all the hassle of re-installing Vista if I
don't have to.

Thanks for all the help.

YW & suit yourself. You can simply hide the updates, if you wish.
