This update sits on my computer waiting to be installed. Every time I try to
install I get a report stating that the installation has failed. I have
downloaded a fresh copy from microsoft download but cannot find out how to
remove the original downloaded copy waiting installation on my computer. Help
is required

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista 64-bit SP2;
Win7 RC; Win7 RTM) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in
your next reply.

The combination of Resolution Methods #3 & #9 on the following page has
resolved this problem for
some users: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 (YMMV)

The computer programme is Win XP SP3. The error code is 0x8007F0DA

I will follow your recommendation tomorrow and report back.

I have now attempted most of the methods offered including the reference to
the article from bleepingcomputer. I can download the security update from
Microsoft Downloads. I can run the download and it installs - and the
installation is recorded in add/remove programs. However no matter what I do
with the information supplied the original downloaded via Microsoft Update
downloaded on 13 October still hangs in my computer and is still waiting
installation. Throughout the process of load and unload, start, shutdown,
restart this installable version remains behind and shows a readiness to
install via the Shield that appears on the desktop. However each time the
install fails.

Thank you for your help and information. The SigVerif.txt from my computer
was Total Files 3454, Signed 33, Unsigned 2496, not scanned 925. There were
no tmp*.cat files in the specified folder.

I can proceed with using my computer except that One Care sometimes loads up
with the amber warning.

I think that I may have to perform an in-place upgrade as I also have had a
series of unexpected shutdowns in the past few months. The Computer and
contents are now four years old and probably could benefit with a good clean.
I just have to move documents and pictures to a plug in hard disk and then
upgrade with the help of a local computer repairer.

Sorry that this reply is long winded and thank you again for providing
information.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB971486 (if listed) and hide it ("Don't show me
this update again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

If that behavior persists after doing the above, post here for assistance:
