Hi,

The Platform Update for Windows Vista (KB971644) fails on my PC since
November 18. As a concequence my PC hangs most of the time when shutting
down (installing 1 of 1 updates...). When trying to install through Windows
Update I get Code 80070020 (Windows Update encountered an unknown error). I
tried installing the update in Safe Mode, but somehow I cannot start Windows
Update in Safe Mode (nothing happens?). I also tried updating with Panda
AVPro switched off: no luck. Any other suggestions? Need help!

My Windows edition is 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2.
Processor is Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8200 @2.33 GHz, 4 GB RAM.

Hoane

Hello Hoane,

0x80070020 -2147024864 STIERR_SHARING_VIOLATION The process cannot access
the file because it is being used by another process

Other folks may have additional ideas for you; hope this helps a bit, take
a look at this

You receive a "0x80070020 The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process" error message when you try to download an
update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update

<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;883825>

see if that helps.

Also, See the section "How to obtain help and support for this security
update" in
KB971644: <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971644>

Good luck

Hoane,

You may think that Panda has been Disabled but apparently it is not.
The error code clearly indicates that " The process cannot access the
file because it is being used by another process. "
Suggest you follow the steps in the MSKB that Engel linked you to and do
" Method 3: Perform a clean boot of the computer and then install the
update " steps for Vista.

FWIW, this is an *optional* update and " the Platform Update for Windows
Vista are collections of runtime libraries that make it easy for
developers to target a wider customer base. "

Since there's no adequate explanation of *why* installing this update is
to * your benefit *, I'd recommend Hiding and forgetting it.

MowGreen, Ǝиçεl,

Thanks for your help. I just tried method 3, with same negative result.
I'll follow MowGreen's adise and hide the update.

As mentioned previously, I see *no* benefit to *you* associated with
installing these "collections of runtime libraries that make it easy for
developers to target a wider customer base. "
Your choice is to install them. Good luck installing the subsequent
*Security updates* that will surely be issued for them.

No1 Solution if you are trying to get live essentials-

Just wasted 5 hours on this .. need KB971644 in order to download live essentials and use messenger live with cam.

If you have the same issue, here's how to get connected, messenger 2011 won't load without KB971644.

So download older messenger v8.1, (find it via a google search and it should load fine), but when you go to enter it you will be told that you must load the newer version. THIS LOADS OK! and the illusive or non existent KB971644, which I have grown to hate is not needed.

You'll be on cam again in less than 30 mins!

Try running the validation tool
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/h...s/default.mspx

A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for
this computer.
