Now go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan |
Install any critical security updates offered as well as the MSRT, if offered. TIP: Do NOT install IE8 if it's not already installed! Hi PA Bear
The computer has been off for a few hours. After starting, noticed yellow shield only offering the Killbits update. Followed your instructions and DL/Inst. just the one that showed on Custom search. I did a restart after the install - no yellow shield showing now. I had no offer on the IE8 upgrade. I still cannot get anything video to show that uses Adobe Flash - checked with Adobe site and got confirmation I had V10 installed. 1. Would it be OK to delete these recent updates from Add/Remove and from C:Windows and try one at a time? 2. Is there an explanation for not being able to do a System Restore. After all, they were inserted prior to each update by Windows? Thank you for your interest/help. Are you running IE6, IE7, or IE8 currently? <= just a question, not a
recommendation or suggestiong! > 1. Would it be OK to delete these recent updates from Add/Remove and from > C:Windows and try one at a time? I wouldn't recommend doing so, no. The security vulnerabilities addressed by those 3 updates (MS09-028; MS09-029; MS09-032) are being actively exploited as I compose this reply. > 2. Is there an explanation for not being able to do a System Restore. > After > all, they were inserted prior to each update by Windows? All you've told us so far is that you've tried using 2 recent Restore Points but the "restore(s) failed," and that's not nearly enough information to work with. Also, you do NOT want to use System Restore to "undo" the install of any Windows Update, IE upgrade, or Windows Service Pack! Can you see the Shockwave and Flash animations here? => http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ If you can, please cite a few of the pages where you cannot see the Flash animations. Also see this page and do all four (4) steps: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html antioch wrote: > The computer has been off for a few hours. > After starting, noticed yellow shield only offering the Killbits update. > Followed your instructions and DL/Inst. just the one that showed on Custom > search. > I did a restart after the install - no yellow shield showing now. > I had no offer on the IE8 upgrade. > I still cannot get anything video to show that uses Adobe Flash - checked > with Adobe site and got confirmation I had V10 installed. > 1. I am ruining IE6. 1. Your reply is understood. But I do have the updates on disc so there would not be any need to use the net. to DL etc. 2. The restore points I tried were two of the three set automatic when I installed each of the three updates. Apart from being told that the system was not restored to the point selected, I am afraid I can add no additional info in that respect, unless there is something you specifically want to know. Re this link - http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ I see no animation showing - there are two boxes - Adobe Shock Player invites me to DL/Install an Active X - the one below informs me that the Install of Macromedia Flash Player in complete - clicking on any of the contents shows nothing. Clicking on the test your authorware player - http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welco...rwareonly.html produces nothing in the next window. In addition, a pop-up tells me that I might need to install the Active X Control 'Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5' - this is not installed as far as I know - a search finds nothing. Many thanks PA - I will go through the uninstall and install procedures as indicated in the link - http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html I remember having to do this for v.8. I thought that might be the case. You may also need to see... Troubleshoot installation problems with Shockwave Player for Windows: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403264.html In short, I don't think any of the updates caused this problem. antioch wrote: > I am ruining IE6. > > 1. Many thanks PA.
I have re-installed, as per the links you gave, Adobe Flash Player 10 Active X and the Adobe Manager as before, and so far, all news and sports sites visited display video clips. I did not have Shockwave Player before - never tried it. I will take a look at it. I suppose its an updated version of Player?? Thank you again - and goodnight/morning from this side of the Little Pond. Regarding the killbits update: I've noticed that these updates often needs
reinstallation after other updates are installed. I'm not sure why, but it appears to be normal, albiet undesirable, behaviour.
