I have been having issues getting my updates to go install on my computer.
I've been reading through the newsgroups and the troubleshooter and have it
down to one last update (KB974455). The error message I get is as follows:

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed

Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that
doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem.

I believe the code that goes with this is 00x8024000...I'm at work now and
my PC is at home so I'm going on memory on that one. I've tried
re-installing the update and have tried the troubleshooter. Any advice?

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...prid=7552&st=1

Also available via...

Consumer Security Support home page
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware:

• http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm

**Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0,
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5,
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or other appropriate forums.**

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

7 digit error codes are useless to try to search with on the web which is
where you are posting from. If you were posting from a real NNTP news
reader you could actually use just those leading digits to try to find one...

FWIW in my cache I'm finding hits for 0x8024000B 0x8024000C
and 0x8024000E with most of them being the first one. Also, when you
are searching it sometimes helps to search also for just the hex string
i.e. without the 0x prefix and in some cases, such as when the code begins
0x8007 to convert the second half to decimal and search with it.

Unfortunately, the web interface's search index seems to be very
badly out of date so any search results you get from it are very likely
to be rather old. That would be another good reason to switch to
a real newsreader. Alternatively, you can try using Google Groups
to search its archive for you. However, it is often not as reliable as we
might like either.

For example, neither of them have your post yet:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us

http://groups.google.com/groups/sear....windowsupdate

Keep checking and see which one wins the race. <eg>

BTW I hope you have this thread tagged to notify you and that you
have enough imagination to use the profile's list of notification URLs
to find it because that's another thing that isn't working very well
with the web interface any more--its notification feature. ; )
