Every time I turn on my laptop I have to wait ages while it gets these
updates , supposedly downloads and installs them, only for them to be
'needed' again the next time!

Is this a virus or what?

Thanks for this,

The links do indicate that my device is compatible.
And this laptop has not had any norton or macafee things on.

The av is Avast - sort of (This has decided to pack up today after updating
to version 5 - now all I get is 'wrongly configured' when I try to open the
config prog...grrrr!)

Cheers,

S

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply. [You should know this by now!]

Sorry about that. I've asked a couple of questions on different groups, and
had not noticed the omission on this one.

XP Home SP3

(Its been one of those days, and I'm still trying to fathom why the new
version of Avast won't show up in the notification area or let me open its
UI, 10 hours after turning the laptop on to do something totally different!
It was while looking at this that I noticed I was also being given the same
updates from MS every day too...)

For KB977165:
<selfquote>
KB977165 is a kernel update and ever since these are released for
Windows XP, MS doesn't get those to install correctly as soon as it's an
OEM system (with OEM drivers installed) on which these kind of updates
should be installed on.

To get these updates for Windows XP installed properly on these systems,
you'll need to download the update from DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...3-5de550adea77
*save* the file into a folder and execute the EXE with the parameter "/o"
(like "/overwriteoem") afterwards.

Let's assume you've downloaded the english version of KB977165 into a
folder "Downloads" which is located on your C: drive. In this case
please restart Windows in Safe Mode (hit the [F8] key after the BIOS
screen occured while booting your machine). Then enter the following
*including* all blanks and quote signs into "Run" in the Start menu
and hit [Enter] or click on OK afterwards:

"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB977165-x86-ENU.exe" /o

After rebooting Windows, the update shouldn't be reoffered by WU/AU once
again.
</selfquote>

For KB975561:
What version of Movie Maker do you have installed on your system?
What's the file version of the "moviemk.exe" to be found in
"C:\Program Files\Movie Maker"? Check via clicking the EXE with the
right mouse button, choose "Properties" from the context menu after-
wards and then click on the "Version" tab of the properties.

Do you have Microsoft Producer 2003 installed too?

Are there any indications to be found in the "KB975561.log" which
is located in the "C:\Windows" folder?

You also may want to uninstall Avast for test purposes and install
Microsoft Security Essentials instead:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Bye,
Freudi

IN RE Avast5, have you posted about the issue here? =>
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer
(e.g., a free trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Are KB977651 and/or KB977165 listed in Add/Remove Programs (after making
certain the Show Updates box at the top is checked)?

How to determine whether a computer is compatible with security update
977165:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980966/

And what Mow said.

Yes: no replies yet. I am currently assuming it is running, but not letting
me use the UI. I have tried several different ways of uninstalling and
reinstalling but it always produces the same result. I also tried to
install Avira, but that just seemed to disappear once the install prog ran!
All has me totally baffled, which is why I asked my other question about the
apparent installer glitch.

No, it originally was part of a college set that had a centrally maintained
Sophos av. We swapped to AVG and then Avast, after we inherited it.

No, and they don't show up in a Belarc scan either.

Yes I did that already after reading some of your other messages.
It checked out as compatible - once I started the installer manually.

I'll be getting on to that...

So you are not the original owner of this computer? Did you format the HDD
& do a clean install of WinXP when it came into your possession?
