Have you tried uninstalling KB978542 from Programs and Features >
Installed updates ?
Windows Mail is not supposed to work in Windows 7 unless you've hacked
it or upgraded from Vista.

Suggest you contact MS for **no-charge support** in resolving this
issue. From: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978542

" How to obtain help and support for this security update

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY
in the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. For more information about how to contact your local
Microsoft subsidiary for support issues with security updates, visit the
Microsoft International Support Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/....aspx?rdpath=4

North American customers can also obtain instant access to unlimited
no-charge e-mail support or to unlimited individual chat support by
visiting the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?&prid=7552

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available
through your usual support contacts. "

The Windows Mail hack is not and never has been supported in Win7 so don't
bother opening a support incident.

Yes, I had a same issue. (Win7+Windows Mail)

1. Uninstall KB978542 recovered Windows mail. But automatically
KB978542 was
installed. Then Windows mail does not work again.
2. Next. I copied original Windows mail folder onto this PC.
(Have to rename your existing windows mail folder to other name before
that)
3. Everything working. I know after this method, KB978542 is NOT applied
your
windows mail. But I prefer to continue to use Windows Mail.

How to repair Windows Mail after the installation of Security Update
KB978542 on a Windows 7 system
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1684

The above article will get Windows Mail functioning again in Windows 7
but the workaround has NOT BEEN TESTED against the vulnerability that
this update is meant to address:

MS10-030: Vulnerability in Outlook Express and Windows Mail could allow
remote code execution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978542

The workaround *should* mitigate the vulnerability as the vulnerable
files are patched in Win 7 and the msoe.dll that replaces the one from
KB978542 for Win 7 is the secure Version of the file intended for Vista.
The key word here is *should*.
