Hi

I'm new here and find all this info great. Kind of new to vista as wel
so its a mine of information for me. Thanks to you all.

My problem is this:

I was running xp pro with sp2 fine for a couple of years and now hav
taken the plunge to go to vista and of course decided to go the dua
boot way. I have XP on 1 sata drive and have loaded Vista premium hom
on another sata drive. Vista is working fine, however when I boot int
xp it runs for a while then just crashes to restart the pc. It neve
used to do this when it was just xp. my system is:

amd 3800 dual core processor
2.5 gb ram
512 mb graphics
pci sound card (can't remember the make off hand)
2 x Sata hdd plugged directly to sata ports on mobo.(these have th
xp/vista loaded)
1 x pci sata card with a sata drive plugged into it
3 other ide hdd's
1 dvd/cd re-writer - ide

500 watt psu

this is a home built system and has been working fine before vista
There is no BSOD so can't even find a possible reason for the crashes.

Anyone any ideas.

I don't really want to attempt a repair on xp as it contains quite
few programs/ games I have used over the years and don't fancy trying t
re-install them.

Thanks in advance

Since Vista is running fine and the issues are with XP, this is really not a
Vista question. I've cross-posted this to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general for you.

In XP, set your computer to not automatically restart so you can get a Stop
Error blue screen. Then you can research the Stop Error.

System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings and under System Failure
uncheck "Automatically Restart"

http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm - Stop Errors

You should also look in XP's Event Viewer for clues.

Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Another useful troubleshooting technique is to do a clean boot in XP to see
if something you have running is the culprit.

And in case you weren't aware of the issues in dual-booting Vista and XP
(although probably not at all related to your problem):

Ok thanks for that I will try these things you mentioned BUT I have this
feeling it is something to do with the vista install as it never
happened before I installed Vista. The pc worked fine with no crashes.
Then I install vista and xp has become almost unworkable.

It could also be a subtle hardware fault. Although one would think
everything hardware-wise would be fine since Vista runs OK, you might try
disconnecting the Vista drive and its power supply and see what happens. If
XP runs fine, then maybe its something wonky on the motherboard that
doesn't like having a second drive connected in that particular SATA spot.
You might want to test the XP hard drive with the mftr.'s drive diagnostic
utility. Hardware can fail and the install of Vista might be coincidental.
But this last is simply a WAG.
