Subject: Having trouble running Windows update after WGA? Possible fix

I recently installed the WGA update (March 2006) and subsequently had
problems running Windows Update properly. Specifically, everytime I would
click "Express" or "Custom", Internet Explorer would crash with an error. The
WGA validation website would also crash when I would click "Validate".
I have managed to fix the problem somehow, though I'm not sure exactly which
intervention was therapeutic. Nevertheless, here is what I did:
1) Temporarily turn off firewalls and antivirus
2) Download and run WGA diagnostic utility (version 2):
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...4/WGADiag2.exe
3) Under IE tab, make sure "Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser
control" is ALLOWED. My setting was previously DISABLED. If it says disabled,
then you must go into Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Security
> Custom Level.
My settings are as follows:
Download signed ActiveX controls: Allowed
Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Prompt
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Allowed
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Prompt (disabled
on my pc)
Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser control: Allowed (disabled
on my pc)
Active scripting: Allowed
Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting: Allowed
4) Once you have selected the proper settings, try to reload the Windows
Update page.
Hope this helps somebody. YMMV. Cheers!
