Adam,
WLM syncs with the online calendar only if a Live ID is used to sign on to Windows Live when using WLM and only with that Live ID's
contacts.
The sync process ensures that the last data edited in either location is synchronized in both places..thus its ***push and pull***
If contacts continue to disappear, it might be appropriate to update the Contact.msi file(only deployed if Windows Live Essentials
was installed after the last required WLMsgr upgrade. If installed before only two options are available to install the update to
the Windows Live Communication platform.
- Remove Windows Live Mail, WLMsgr, PhotoGallery and Movie Maker, download the current web or full installer and reinstall the
program
or
- obtain the Contacts.msi file from Jonathan Kay, WLMsgr MVP web site, close all Windows Live, right click the file and choose
install(this will update 6 dlls and one exe file). This QFE patch addressed the missing contact issues that were present on some
systems using WLM/WLMsgr regardless of contacts being present online at contacts.live.com
You can read more about the QFE update in the spaces.live.com link below:

To install the updated files:
Download the Contacts.msi using the above direct link, save to your machine
Shutdown all Live applications
Temporarily disable your AV(optional, though suggested by this writer)
Right click the msi file and choose 'Install'
