I had that problem for a while. Vista doesn't ever really lose a file,
it just misplaces it. From personal experience, changing the appearance
of Vista from optimal performance to optimal appearance typically causes
this. Don't know why though.
Back to the real question, this is how you get your messages back. Go
to the Control Panel, and under Folder Options allow yourself to see
hidden files and folders. After that, go to your primary hard drive
(typically the C drive), go to Users, select your user file, open the
shaded folder called AppData, click on the folder that says Local,
Microsoft, Windows Mail, Local Folders, and there should be all your
boxes and messages.
If you ever lose anything with Vista, go to your C drive, and use the
search bar. That was one of the good additions to Windows Vista. Aside
from that, avoid tweaking any files outside of your User file. I did
that and it's given me hell now.
