I installed the latest update for Windows Vista. My computer told me the
operation was successful. However, 10 minutes later, it is asking me to
update the same file again. I've done this at least 5 times now.

What gives?

John

For someone to help you, they might need to know what file is requesting
the update.

Also, have you rebooted since the five updates?

Thanks JD,

Here are more details regarding the issue.

* Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows
Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2446708)
* Download size: 11.2 MB

As to rebooting. Yes, after every update is complete as requested.

Since updating the brittle .NET Frameworks is an ongoing crap shoot, the
question that remains is ...

Do *you* need to have .NET Framework 4.0 installed in the first place ?

If a program, application, or web site needs .NET Framework 4 installed
in order for it to function, then install it.
Microsoft offers it as an *Optional* update because it is to their
benefit, not *yours*.

BTW, the post that JD linked you to gets it's resolution steps from this
blog, which was posted on March of 2008 -

Updated: what to do if other .NET Framework setup troubleshooting steps
do not help
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/arc...7/8108332.aspx

It took Microsoft the better part of *TWO* years before they started
pointing folks at it and started providing the same steps in their forum
posts, assorted blogs, or KB articles.

I want to thank those offering suggestions on how to resolve this issue.

While the latest input was rather confusing and involved, and actually did
not address the original question, I did try what was originally suggested.

While I was apparently successful in actually fixing the file in question,
within 10 minutes, I had another notice to install and update the same
Windows file. In other words, we are right back to where we started.

To restate this once again, Windows is telling me to update my computer with
a new file. I do this, which is actually acknowledge as a successful
completion. However, 10 minutes later, I am asked to install and update on
my computer with the very same file, even thought it was apparently just
done.

As an alternative, I was going to delete the installed file, instead of just
fixing it, then try to install and update the one that keeps showing up, but
a warning said certain files may not work if I uninstall, so I thought
better of it.

So, that's where I stand.

Any other suggestions?

John

Don't believe the so-called "warning". Unless a program, application, or
web site *requires* that .NET 4 be installed in order for it to
function, then *you* have no need for it nor the ongoing issues
associated with it's inherent brittleness and/or keeping it updated.

A superficial check of the Windows Update Answers forum shows over 188
"Answered" threads being posted about NET Framework updating issues.
Go here -
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...page=1&tab=yes

In the 'Find answers' field type in .NET. Click Search.
Now check the so-called "Answers" to see how many posters actually
received an answer that *resolved* the installation issues.

Uninstall .NET 4, reboot.
Run the .NET Framework cleanup tool, reboot -
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx

If you're a glutton for punishment, download, *save*, and install the
..NET Framework 4 Standalone package either with *all* programs and
browsers being closed or from the Clean boot state -

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows
Vista or in Windows 7
