I have Windows 98 and did a number of updates and now my keyboard seems to
fail after a short while. Mouse still is functional. I have tried another
keyboard with the same results. Any help would be appreciated.

That's an odd one. Have you tried uninstalling the keyboard from device
manager, then restarting and letting the drivers reinstall?

Could be failing hardware too.
