I had trouble accessing a website approximately 2 weeks ago and their
suggestion was to run windows update and dump temp internet files. Both of
which I did. Normally I check and run windows update at least once a
month, I am behind a hardware firewall , a software firewall, and antivirus
software (definitions were up to date until I ran the windows update). I
utilize adaware to relieve myself of spyware and have not had a virus,
trojan, worm or browser hijacker in over 2 years. Now I am unable to access
some websites, my virus software will not update it's definitions, zonealarm
pro will not update, I have tried to uninstall XPSP2 to no avail. I have
even done a system restore only to have the crap go back in time with me.
I am at my wits end. I have attempted to remove the update from ad/remove
programs and it comes up telling me it can't copy files therefore it won't
uninstall. Someone please help me before I have to wipe the whole damn
thing out and start over!!!!!!! and if that's the case I will under NO
curcumstances update to SP2, I don't give a rat's behind if it is mandatory
for future updates.

I hear you Brea. I am in the same boat. I keep my stuff updated myself.

If I was not able to do it myself I **might** let Microsoft do it. I think I
can do it a little bit better than Microsoft.

PC's)

Hmmm...looks like Microsoft has really screwed this one up. (As Gomer Pyle
would say, "Surprise, surprise!") They tell everyone to turn on update, send
out notices the update is ready to download, and then frustrate the hell out
of users with *no* update downloads and/or problems galore.

Why do I get the feeling no one at Microsoft thought about *effectively*
communicating their intentions and (in)abilities to consumers they made jump
through hoops only to see *nothing* [or worse] happen? Jeesh. Thanks for
nothing, Microsoft. But, I am also behind a hard firewall, soft firewall, use
all the anti-adware and anti-spyware, and remain currently updated--manually.
I now *may* look at XPSP2 again in 2-3 months.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Did I trust what Microsoft might say before this obvious
fiasco? Just barely. Do I trust anything they say now? No freaking way!

After you've calmed down a little, try turning off your software firewalls,
the WINXP one via the Control Panel and your third party one. Then try
again. I think you will find your problems will be solved. Now turn on
your third party firewall, provided it's not ZoneAlarm, and configure it to
allow access to whatever sites your system automatically accesses, typically
AVP sites for updates etc. I understand ZoneAlarm is having problems
interfacing with SP2, although there maybe a recent version that has
overcome the initial problems. You should not reactivate the WINXP firewall
if you are using a third party firewall. Having two firewalls active is
likely to give rise to problems and will not improve security.

Disabling Zone Alarm is a no brainer, it still doesn't fix the problem of my
anitvirus' failure to download up to date virus definitions, or the fact
that I can't access certain web sites. My system shows an ICF (internet
connection firewall) which is the original firewall that came with WinXP.
I found it to be completely inadaquate and it has been disabled since the
begining of time on my machine, hence the use of Zone Alarm. The new XPSP2
is rumored to have a "newer better firewall" called a "Windows Firewall". I
have been unable to locate this newer better version on my system, and to be
perfectly honest with you I don't want the damn thing. SOOOOO instead of
telling me to disable my system security tell me how to get rid of the XPSP
update, which is what I asked for in the first place. Thank you very much.

I'm running version 4.5.538.000 Zone Alarm Pro. Thank you for the
information, I will see about upgrading. However I don't think that will fix
the antivirus problem. Disabling ZA has no affect on the virus software
problem. I've read that the newer better version of the Windows firewall's
default is to not let any traffic through, and I can't find the thing to
disable or tweak to allow the virus software through.

The big 'fault' or criticism of WINXP firewall is it will not prevent
anything going out, it only protects against incoming stuff. So if your AVP
won't connect it is not WINXP firewall that is giving you the problem. I
had a very similar 'problem' to you and I use with Sygate firewall. Its
fixed now but I had to download the most recent version. There has been
several reports of problems with ZoneAlarm so I wouldn't be suprised if the
latest version solves your problem for you.

If you can't locate the new Firewall I'm wasting my time trying to help you.
Just for your information, go to Device Manager then Security and disable
the firewall there . I'm sorry if that is beyond you and suggest you might
want to dump your machine and find easier toys to play with. As far as
reverting to SP1 from SP2, you must be dense as SP2 has a roll back
feature, just use it.

As far as system security is concerned, I understood, perhaps incorrectly,
you are behind a router with NAT. NAT protects you against incoming stuff
so what are you worried about? It sounds that this is all little too much
for you.

It seems to me that you have mistaken my frustration as a personal attack,
if that is indeed so, please accept my apology. I also believe you have
mistaken the fact that by providing information in an attempt to get my
machine back in running order that I am a computer whiz. Let me reassure
you, nothing could be further from the truth. However, when I encounter
problems and research everything I can possibly think of to correct said
problem without acceptable results, I do what 2 million other people
responding in this message group are doing, I ask for advice. Nothing stupid
about that now is there? I will not address the fact that your idea of
helping someone is to degrade and verbally abuse them. Speaking of toys, if
I ran into you on the play ground I would take my toys and go home.
Having said that, I have followed your direction and do not have a security
tab in my Device Manager. I have read many of the questions and responses
in this news group and have tried to repair without any results. I have
even tried to remove the XPSP2 using the command prompt only to receive the
following "The file name, directory name, or volume Syntax is incorrect".
This morning I have uninstalled my antivirus, and software firewall, not
disabled, but uninstalled. I am once again going to attempt to redownload
the Winupdate and go from there.
