Knowing if AU = "Automatic" is really working on server?!

I'm troubleshooting automatic updates *and* their resulting automatic
reboots. Neither seems to be happening on one or more WS03 servers which
have their AU settings to be fully "Automatic (recommended)". (the top
choice)

For example the now-famous MS05-039 (KB899588) was issued 8/9/05 but on the
server in question seems to have only installed it when I manually ran
Windows Update on 8/17/05.

So how can I confirm that if a server is set to "Automatic" that it's really
working, including the auto-reboot part. I'd rather not have to wait until
the next round of critical patches that MS issues to find out. I'd like to
confirm this now, in advance of that.

Also, is there some way to see when AU was changed to "Automatic"... in my
case I'd like to know for sure that it was set that way before 8/17/05. If
it was, then I know that something isn't working right. Is there some
record of changing this setting in the event log or somewhere?

TIA!

Rich

Hi,

To make sure on a machine:
NET STOP WUAUSERV
REN %WINDIR%\windowsupdate.log windowsupdate.old
NET START WUAUSERV

edit %WINDIR%\windowsupdate.log windowsupdate.old and look at it, you'll
find out how the service is setup.

Chris
