Laptop attempts dialup while online via wireless high-speed

Dell laptop, Home Premium, Conexant modem
This Vista installation works perfectly.

For the last few days the Connect Dialup Connection box
appears unexpectedly, as the system attempts dialup.
Properties refer to the laptop's internal 56k modem,
with no number selected. At the time of such an event,
it is online via wireless and operating fine.

When it happens, the communication application that's up
at the moment just runs until I notice that box in the
background and bring it to focus, and close it. It's as
though the dialup box has taken priority...

I'm 100% wireless at home and at the office, and never
need dialup.

How can I disable that dialup box?

Thanks!

What is this "communication application" that you mention?

Check its settings to see if perhaps it is set to work with dial-up as its
preferred method of connecting.

All I can think of.

Well, it's whatever internet app is running at the
moment. For instance, I can be working in Firefox or
Thunderbird, and everything's fine - and suddenly that
#$@!! dialup box appears.

I'm don't have Firefox or Thunderbird, so I can't explore their settings.
Internet Explorer has settings for setting a default connection, which can
be a dial-up connection, and which can be set to dial or not dial, etc.

Drill down in both Firefox and Thunderbird and look for a similar setting.

If it happens with only Firefox and Thunderbird, and not with Internet
Explorer, then a Mozilla/Firefox/Thunderbird forum might be more helpful.

In Internet Options, connection tab, set it to never dial...
If you need to dial, you can do it manually or change the setting back.

Since the problem is not app-specific (happens in IE as
well as FF and TB, etc), this seems very promising.

However, I have not found "Internet Options", even in
Help...

????
