Laptop in question: HP Pavilion DV2000, running Windows Vista Home (
think 32-bit).

Today, I was using my laptop, running on battery power only.
Unfortunately, the battery no longer locks. I moved the laptop and th
battery fell out. Naturally, as was not plugged in to an external powe
source, my laptop shut off.

Upon re-inserting the battery (and plugging in the laptop to a
external power source for good measure), I received the "Windows Erro
Recovery" screen, presenting me with:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Start Windows Normally

I tried "Start Windows Normally", and after a loading screen (Microsof
Corporation at bottom), then the screen went black. I could see th
mouse on screen, yet Vista would not boot up.

I manually shut down my computer and this time selected "Safe Mode"
same thing, loading screen, then screen goes black with mouse.

I then hit "F7" to get to the "Advanced Boot Options":

REPAIR YOUR COMPUTER
SAFE MOD
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Enable boot logging
ENABLE LOW RESOLUTION VIDEO (640 × 480)
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION (ADVANCED
Directory services restore mode
DEBUGGING MODE
DISABLE AUTOMATIC RESTART ON SYSTEM FAILUR
Disable Driver Signature Enforcement
START WINDOWS NORMALL

I tried the options in *bold*, and the same thing happened each time
loading screen, then screen goes black with mouse, Vista does not load.

I also tried the "Repair your computer" option, which got me to th
"System Recovery Options" screen where I didn't know how t
proceed...(so I simply restarted, never actually getting to the loadin
screen).

The only other possible thing was the fact that I had unchecked a fe
Nvidia options in "Startup" using "msconfig" (all of which were no
necessary on startup). However, after doing this
I__was_able_to_restart_the_computer_twice_without_ any_problems_ (befor
the battery fell out), so I'm pretty sure this isn't the problem.

I'm so lost

Hi,

You likely damaged the installation with the sudden power loss and your only
viable option may be to invoke whatever recovery method HP provided for you.

I'm confused with your statement, "damaged the installation". This was
not the first time I have turned on my laptop -- Vista has been
installed and working for over a year (since I bought it)...

When the battery dropped out, my laptop was -on- -- I was about to
print a Microsoft Word document actually.

Plus, I have tons of files I can't afford to lose -- are there really
no other options I can try besides a full recovery?

Sorry! I'm confused...

Thanks for your help.

Since you said you tried all of the normal boot/repair options with no
success, you have probably irrevocably damaged the Windows installation.
IOW, it's corrupted. You can retrieve any data that didn't make it into
your latest backup by booting with a rescue system such as a Linux Live CD
(I prefer Knoppix) or a Bart's PE and copying the files to an external hard
drive. After your data is safe, restore your computer to factory condition
by whatever method the laptop mftr. provided.

Hi,

Pull the drive, use a converter to slave it to another machine and recover
your files before doing anything.

The sudden loss of power likely corrupted either the operating system or the
file system. Regardless of which it is, as Malke has indicated you've
already tried the available options of getting the system back. HP's
recovery method usually wipes the slate clean, so pulling the files from the
drive prior to doing a reinstall is important as they won't be there once
the process completes.

Then also find a better means of securing the battery to prevent this from
happening again.

So how about reinstalling the OS, then take your DATA BACKUP and restore
your files to your new installation.

I hope you made backups of your important data. Even if your system was
working fine, a hard drive crash could occur at any time. People need to
think that each time they power up their computer, their drive could crash.

If you haven't made a backup, then remove the drive and put it into another
computer as a slave drive and retrieve data that way.

If that is successful, reinstall the Operating System, restore your data and
get a backup routine to save your data.

I can't believe how many people don't back up their data. Boggles the mind.
