hi everyone

I have a dell XPS m1330 that came preinstalled with windows Vista-Home
Premium. That system has been reinstalled few times due to issues that have
nothing to do how it works, it was all for partitioning to have more
operating systems next to windows like Linux-Ubuntu, right now the main
configuration on my laptop is a one operationg system only which is Windows
Vista-Home Premium and it's been working with me rock solid for the past 8 or
9 months with no problems at all.

Anyhow, Today Wednesday the 23rd of July, I was notified by my windows
update taskbar icon that there are new updates availabe, before I proceed my
also has already been upgraded to Service Pack 1 since it came out I always
keep my system up to date, so I went ahead checked the new update and it
turned to be Windows Search release 4.0 so I applied the updates, they began
to get downloaded and they finished downloading automatically the
installation process began.

The installation process automatically would reboot my system several times
in order to finish installing the updates which were segemented into 3
updates or stages for example: it would go like this

"Windows is applying 1 of 3 updates Progress (percentage) don't shut computer"

and after reaching 100% it would restart, and then moves into stage 2 which
completed succefully and then when it came to stage three it just displayed
this message like the previous ones
"Windows is applying updates stages 3 of 3 progress 0% don't shut computer
now"

and it remained at 0 percent and it wouldn't budge from from there and then
I see the message "windows shutting down" and then my computer reboots and it
been doing it ever since indefinitely..and the funny thing I never get to see
sign it with my own password to log in..it just display the first message
right on the welcome screen rendering it inaccessible andthen it restarts the
computer..

I have tried using safe mode..but also to no avail the same process
appeared there too..Please Please anyone help me I beg you please help
me..all my important data are on that system just anyone help me.

See if this is applicable to the issue. You will need the installation
media that Vista came on to accomplish this:

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

Try Method 1 first. If no joy, try Method 3.

You mention " so I applied the updates " but you cite only Windows
Search 4.0. Were there any other updates installing at the same time ?

Thank you so much for your help your post solved the problem completely. And
sorry for not being very clear, it was wording problem when I tried to
explain how the 'update applied' it didn't say applying updates, as in
multiple updates, I checked back again on my laptop and it said configuring
updates, though it was only and I repeat a one update the new Windows Search
4, and as soon as it was downloaded by window update to my computer and the
process of installation began a process of configuring updates, that's the
way windows put it, started in the form of consecutive stages of restarting
the pc, configuring updates 'in windows words' the first stages or update 1
of 3, and then 2 of 3 and then 3 of 3 by the way I just applied that windows
update on my desktop computer which has triple operating systems, Windows XP
professional, Windows Vista Business and Linux Ubuntu, and the process went
fine and in stages as I noted before..

Finally I would like to bring to your attention the URL you posted didn't
work, and when I googled it gave me the same URL you posted but didn't work,
actually I had to get from another website where a person had the same exact
problem and someone answered wit a URL pointing a solution to that problem:

this is the website:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&cr=&sloc=&p=1

and this the URL to the solution as posted by Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

at the end thank you so much for your help I am grateful for the prompt
reply and the help thank you so much..

best regards

Ashraf ... you're mowst welcome, although I fail to see how the URL
posted was different from the one you came across ...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358
as opposed to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358 ???

As long as you have access to the system now, that's really all that
matters. <w>

hi, i had this exact same issue this week, and it's also happened to three
other people i know this week, as well. there may be more appropriate ways of
dealing with this, but here's what i did instead of throwing my computer from
the window of our 6th floor flat! i was in a right panic, all my data, neatly
transferred from the last machine that microsoft updates polished off for me,
(still trying to get my sound card back from SP3 for XP) THANKS FOR THAT, BY
THE WAY!!!
Anyway... i ended up having to do a system restore to a point before the
freaking updates, then, I PROMTPLY went into the settings for updates and set
it BACK TO DO NOT INSTALL UPDATES WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST...
maybe this time it will hold the setting...
ya know, i paid for both of these OS's, WHY THEN does Microsoft feel
compelled to destroy my equipment? I can't even use my version of Office
2007, my BRAND NEW PRODUCT KEY is apparently being rejected, so WHAT HAVE I
PAID FOR?? This is fast turning into a rant, and i know there is no point ,
so keep your updates OFF, hope this helps someone else... JUST MAKE SURE YOU
BACK YOUR STUFF UP!! you never know when corporate malice may strike again

Feel better now ? Good. You do know that you are replying to a thread
about an issue in Vista that started on July 23rd and has had nothing
posted to it since July 24th.
And yet, you describe an issue with a sound card and XP SP3. Or, did
you mean, a Vista system had the rebooting issue after installing
Windows Search 4.0 ? Did you see this MSKB ? -

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

*Anytime* one installs a Service Pack, one should *always* backup
whatever one does not want to lose, just in case. In fact, regularly
scheduled backups are *highly* recommended as a sound practice.

MS has it's 'quirks' but the last thing they want to do is ' destroy
your equipment '. If you're having issues with Office, suggest you seek
assistance in an Office newsgroup where there are experts who most
likely can assist you or, at the very least, point you in the proper
direction.

> I PROMTPLY went into the settings for updates and set
> it BACK TO DO NOT INSTALL UPDATES WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST...

> so keep your updates OFF, hope this helps someone else

Eh ? Did you Disable automatic updating or did you set it to Notify
prior to installation ?
Turning off updating solves nothing except that the system will now be
exposed to Critical vulnerabilities that are mitigated by ...
UPDATES.

But, it's your system and your rant. Do as you wish but realize that
these groups are not monitored by MS, just by a few foolhardy volunteers
and an occasional guest appearance by Softies who volunteer their time, too.
