Laptop suddenly doesn't recognise iPAQ, treats it as 'Guest'

Have been happily synching over bluetooth every day for weeks without
problems, haven't changed ANY settings, then suddenly today, when I try to
synch, Activesync opens and shows 'Guest' connected, (not PocketPC, as it
should). It momentarily shows PocketPC but then instead of 'looking for
changes' the 'Guest' connected window come up on top of the PocketPC
Activesync window. I've tried going back to an earlier system restore point
on the laptop but this doesn't make any difference. The data which enables
my laptop to 'recognise' the PC must have got corrupted somehow - how can I
find/retrieve/fix it? Have done a soft reset on the iPaq, that also made no
difference. I can 'explore' the iPAQ via the Activesync 'Guest' window, so
the bluetooth connection bit is working, but I can't sync. I'm dreading
having to re-install everything. iPAQ is 4150 model, running windows XP home
and activesync 4.1.0.

Hi,
Did you restore the iPAQ recently? Have you considered deleting the
partnership on the PC? If you delete the partnership it should allow you to
connect and setup a partnership again.

Thanks for this, Chris.

No, I hadn’t recently restored the iPAQ, but as it happens, I have found the
root of the problem. I happened to notice a 3.3MB .wav file on the iPAQ
which was not intended to be there and was created AFTER the last successful
synch - the 'record' button must have got inadvertently pressed and made a
recording file. After I deleted that, did an iPAQ backup to the memory card
and then the soft re-boot that follows, everything worked fine.

Just for my future reference, if I had deleted the partnership and set up a
new one, would Activesync have recognised the iPAQ data from the last
successful synch and synchronised from there in the usual way, or would I
have had to start again as though there were no Outlook or 3rd party software
files/data on the iPAQ? That was what I was trying to avoid, because it
takes ages, and you’re never entirely sure whether you’ve lost any data.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. If you deleted the partnership you would have to setup
the partnership from scratch including 3rd party synchronizations.
