Laptop won't update (Error #0x80072EE2]

I've got a Vaio laptop with Windows XP Home SP 1. I haven't been able
to get updates using the school's wireless network since last spring.
Someone on this newsgroup told me it was because I was "behind a
proxy." Whatever that means.

I've brought the laptop home and used the phone line and a dialup. It
still won't update. I get to the choice between Express/Custom. I
click Custom. Then I get a message that update has encountered a
problem and cannot display the updates. Error No. 0x80072EE2.

Note, that I have a desktop computer at home, using the same dialup
properties, also have Windows XP Home SP 1, and can update without
trouble.

What's going on here?

first, we can refer to

You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" or "Error 0x80072EFD" error message when
you try to use Windows Update
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941

If it does not work, try the following steps.

Reset the proxy list (and bypass list)
===============================
This issue can occur if the proxy has not been configured correctly. Let's
first reset the proxy list.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.
4. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
5. Quit Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

proxycfg -u
proxycfg -d
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

Delete the Hosts file
=====================
The Hosts file is used for host name resolution. If this file has been
modified, we cannot access the Windows Update site properly and can receive
the error code.

1. Click Start, Run, type "%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc" (Without the
quotation) and then press Enter.
2. Right-click the hosts file and choose Delete.
3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
4. Then, clear the DNS (Domain Name Resolution) cache:

1). Click Start, Run, type "cmd" (Without the quotation) and press Enter.
2). In the opened window, type: "ipconfig /flushdns" (Without quotations)
and press Enter.

Note: The hosts file will be generated automatically after being removed.

Hi Sam,
This sounds hopeful. But before I mess with my laptop's proxy
and network settings, which allow me to access the wireless network at
school, and which are vital -- VITAL -- to some work I am doing for
low-income clients -- ....

The last thing I want to do at this point is lose network
connectivity -- So....

May I make a new logon account, with administrator privileges,
and mess with the proxy and network on _ JUST THAT ACCOUNT _ without
risking my default logon account?

???

PS: I ran a command: proxycfg.exe /?
The Dossy window it is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program or batch file.
I searched my laptop for proxycfg.exe -- including hidden files
-- there is no such file on my system.
Note -- I ran these commands while the laptop was at home, NOT
connected to the internet, with the wireless card NOT turned on.
Do I presume correctly that I am not behind a proxy?
