My latest update for my XP machine is Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86
(KB829019) which was done on 1/13/2009.

I did a manual check for updates and the update below is available for my
machine.

Download size: 248.4 MB , 23 hours 13 minutes
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

I live in a rural area and the only affordable internet connection is dialup.

As you can see the estimated time for the download is way too long. First do
I need the download and if so can Microsoft break the download into smaller
segments or can I get a disk mailed to me.

I have Windows XP Media addition 2005.

I have the same problem - so I go to a library to download big updates. This
may be too big. Do we need this update? Not sure what this .NET software
does.

Ditto for me re: the size and being on dialup. Besides, the estimated
download time is always much shorter than the real time. MSN is my dialup ISP
and wouldn't even allow me to remain linked continuously for that long, even
if it were feasible otherwise.

But, no one has resonded to the key question: Can one obtain the update on a
CD?
That's what was done with SP3, which also was huge. So, where can we go to
find out?

Via Windows Update Catalog you may:
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/....aspx?q=951847

You'll need to use Internet Explorer to open the link above and
download the version(s) you need.

Thanks, but autoupdate already has attempted the appropriate download. The
"key question" that I and others are asking wasn't which one but rather: Can
it be obtained VIA CD? Because, on a dial-up link, the download would require
continuous connection for more than 24 hours.

I am asking Update Support via email.

No, but you can download it via WU Catalog from another machine which
is broadband connected, burn KB951847 on CD and install that one manually
on your smallband connected machines. There's no other "solution" for the
"issue" until MS rethinks their distribution methods for that specific
update.

Fine, let us know what they think ;->
