I use automatic notification for updates and install from the shield in the
taskbar. Add/remove is showing KB931784 installed as is "review update
history" on the update site. The shield remains in the taskbar with KB931784
to be installed. When I went to the update site to check if I needed to
install KB931784, it came up as a "critical update" that needs to be
installed. What do I need to do to discover if this update is truly
installed?

I was having similar problems. The Update kept wanting to reinstall
over and over.

I finally shut down the computer, picking the "Shut Down and Install
Updates" option. After starting it up again, the update notification
program hasn't come back. (yet). =P

I was having similar problems. It kept wanting to reinstall itself.

I finally shut down the computer, picking the "Shut Down and Install
Updates" option. After starting it up again, the update notification
program hasn't come back. (yet). =P

Thanks for your input.

Assuming you're on Windows XP SP2:

Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-a9f1eae19b51

*Save* the file to a folder your harddisk (let me call it "C:\Downloads"),
do *not* execute it from within your browser.

Afterwards type the following under "Run" in the Start menu:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

The parameter "/o" (o like overwriteOEM) should do the trick for you.
Note the blank between the last quote sign and the parameter /o!

Freudi,
I copied and pasted into "Run" and also typed the "C:\". Error message that
states that Windows cannot find the file. It is in a folder named Downloads
on the desktop. It shows up when I did "Search". Do you have any further
suggestions?

Did you saved/moved a copy of WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe into
the C:\Downloads folder? You have to copy the quote signs " too!

See above.

KB931784 is in the Downloads folder on the desktop. "Search "can find it but
not "Run".

If you insist on the Downloads folder on your desktop, the command
would be
"%userprofile%\Desktop\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o
