After the last set of automatic updates, my PC would not boot, got a "stop"
error.DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Each time I did a sytem restore, it
toook me back to the point before the updates were installed (now 3 times).
How do I know which of the following caused it: KB911565, KB911564, KB911927,
KB913446, KB890830. I mean other than one at a time until the problem recurrs.

Mike,
First things first, I do not have a ready fix for this. However, while you
are waiting for the quick fix to appear, you may want to look at the
following.
There does appear to have been a spate of problems with recent downloads
which in some cases have been due to the Anti Virus Guard not being updated
to work with the latest Microsoft downloads. PA Bear has found a solution
which I have followed and it has worked on my Win 98 SE machine and I will
detail his process below.
All MS updates will have an accompanying KB Article as a minimum and if it
is a security update there will also be a Technet MSXX-XXX bulletin as well.
What I would do is look for the file list in the KB article or if a security
update it will be buried deep down in that text of that article. From the
file list in each update, you will be able to see what has the oldest files
( i.e. the lowest revision levels of the files being the oldest). You can
then work out the load sequence of the updates from the oldest first.. Do
not rely on the KB article number as these are not always in sequence. If
the Security Updates are cumulative as the case of Internet Explorer, the
last update will have all the fixes of previous ones. However, I would still
go with the oldest first.
What you need to do is create a new folder on you system under the main (C)
drive with a unique name. Then go to Windows Update Catalogue :-
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
In the left pane under "See Also" select Windows Update Catalogue, follow
that through selecting the Windows Updates and your operating system.
Eventually a list of updates will be listed for your operating system. ADD
any update you want to you download folder and then specify the location to
download it to, i.e. your unique folder name previously created. Download
will load all the updates to your machine for installation at a later date.
PA Bears process - after clearing the History etc, go straight to item 2 and
then substitute the update number of the update you wish to install.:-
Do one update at a time and see what happens.
Alan

Having somewhat of a similar problem since downloading update KB911927 and
KB913446. I was cutoff midway in downloading them so the downloads were
corrupt i thought so I uninstalled them and since i uninstalled them my
computers wireless network capabilities is down. I tried to reenable them
but the problem still persists. Somewhere in the wireless network the
updates broke something. I tried to reinstall broadcom's wireless driver,
updated that one too. Still nothing. Tried uninstalling the driver,
reinstalling, rolling back. NOTHING works. How do you fix a corrupted
driver now from a bad update install?
