HAve just downloaded the latest optional sound card update from the website.
However now XP has no volume control slider. It also reset to default the
welcome screens and caused a specialist visual impairment programme to loose
contact with its drivers.

Not impressed Mr. Gates's development team. How can I restore the volume
control or get the system to recognise the sound module which it now does
not. The specialist programme you caused to loose its drivers was Zoom Text
v.7

It's an OPTIONAL update. That means it's YOUR choice of installing it or
not. No one is FORCING you to install it.
If the system is not experiencing the symptoms described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920872
then uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
If it's not listed, then you will have to navigate to
WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB920872$
Open the spuninst folder contained therein and run spuninst.exe

First off... You downloaded hardware drivers for a non-Microsoft piece of
hardware from Microsoft.
Not good.

Get the latest drivers from the actual manufacturer of said hardware and
install those. That should fix your issue.

The drivers you probably got from Microsoft are likely many revisions behind
those you will get from those who actually produced the product in question.

I accept it was optional. I accept I was not forced to download it. Still no
reason for the updates to reset operating system to default settings and
loose the sound module altogether. It is a pain when something that worked
fine before the update causes grief post update.

Hi Shenan
Do MS only offer digitally signed drivers that pass the Windows Hardware
Quality Lab (WHQL) tests.
And not all manufacturers submit all their products for this quality test -
that's why when updating a driver you have to ignore the warning given in
the install wizard and go ahead and install. Some manufacturers do tell you
about this warning in their install instructions.
I have found drivers from MS to be four or five years out of date :-)

Thus - my recommendation you always get hardware drivers from the
manufacturer of said hardware. They are the one with a vested interest in
said product and the only ones who create the drivers (usually.) Getting
the non-microsoft hardware drivers from Microsoft all-but-guarantees you
will get an older driver than that being offered currently by the actually
manufacturer. Most manufacturers would not be able to afford (nor want to
try) getting every driver release they have put out certified through
Microsoft. For many that could be several a month.

I have always recommended everyone get their drivers for non-microsoft
hardware from the non-microsoft source.
