Anybody else getting this error (and a fix for it !!). I have Windows XP SP2
on my laptop and this month have been unable to download the latest security
patches KB834707 and KB885884. I installed last months secuirty patches no
problem, I tried to make the update site a trusted site and also as an
exclude on the proxy but neither suggestion has worked. Every time I try I
now get the error code 80072EFD. All suggestions and help welcome.

When accessing the Windows Update site, you receive the 0x80072EFD error.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=16&ln=en

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941
You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" or "Error 0x80072EFD" error message when you try to
use Windows Update

Error: 80072efd = ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT
Translation: Cannot connect to the Internet server

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error.

If you have Norton Internet Security or something similar installed (e.g. some 3rd
party firewall as mentioned in the article above), you might need to reconfigure or
disable it.

Here is more about this issue:

This is how I set Norton firewall so I can download updates and keep the firewall
on--

Here is how I was able to work around the problem.
Using command prompt
1. proxycfg -d (to clear proxy cache)
2. net stop wuauserv (to stop Automatic updates service)

Using Windows Explorer
3. Delete all files and folders in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (your windows folder may vary)

Again using command prompt
4. net start wuauserv (to start Automatic updates service)

Try now going back to Windows Update web page.

It worked for me. YMMV

I had the same problem, these two updates just wouldnt install.
i tried the suggestion below, by stopping the service, and deleting the
files, but to no avail.

when i downloaded the two files manually (looking up the KB numbers in
download.microsoft.com) i encountered an error on file branches.inf.

i found that this file is located in c:/windows/inf and if you remove the
read-only attribute, the updates do work.

hope this helps!
(it did for me)

Regards,
