After installing a package of XP (Media Center) updates today
(automatically), I have encountered two problems
1. My iTunes player will no longer add new folders; the program just loops
and I have to ctrl-alt-del out of it
2. Similarly, in Windows Explorer, if I click on the plus sign next to 'My
Computer' the program becomes unresponsive; I never get the drop down list
and I have to ctrl-alt-del out of it.
I used System Restore to backtrack and everything works fine.
Any suggestions please.
Keith

Sound like the same problem I have, due to update 908531. Look at the
(clever) answers to my question "Program response problem" further down in
the threads window.

No luck for me, Roland. I've already tried the syuggested registry fix and
it has made no difference to my problem.

Try removing update 908531 and see if your system is working normally again. If you remove the update, be /certain/ you follow good security practices.
1. Use firewall
2. Use up-to-date antivirus
3. Use a good antispyware program

See my post at Aumha.net for fix suggestions.

I have the same problem following the automatic update. Now Windows Explorer
doesn't work properly (same symptoms others report) and the computer hangs up
whenever I try to save something. Additionally, I tried system restore, but
after trying three restore points, Windows says it is unable to go to the
selected restore point. Is there any other way to remove this update, or to
fix Windows Explorer?

Well, I solved it in the following way:
The culprit, as is indicated elsewhere, is HP's Share to Web. Stupidly
(IMHO), this is not uninstallable because it comes as an integral part of
HP's driver software for my Scanjet. So I went into Startup and unchecked
the hpgs2wnd.exe; then I killed the same program in the system processes.
This isn't enough of itself; you have to brutally finish off this Share to
Web beast which I have never used and which lurks in the Programs/Hewlett
Packard folder. You cannot delete the file or move it but you can rename it;
once renamed I deleted it; then I moved the rest of the Share to Web Folder
to a temp folder where it now rests in peace. Hey presto! Everything works
again.
I say shame on HP for forcing utilities like this on users. And I pity
anyone who doesn't have some degree of knowledge about how to troubleshoot
this. I'm a rank amateur but at least I've done it - though it's taken me
all day. What are less proficient people supposed to do now that Windows
Explorer doesn't work for them???

It wasn't HP for me. It was the MS Security Update 908531. I got out of the
Windows Explorer problem by uninstalling the security update. (I don't have
the HP Share to Web installed on my computer.

To uninstall, go to the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, ensure the
"Show Updates" box is marked, look for the MS Security Update 908531 and
remove it. I didn't realize you could remove updates until I saw the same
info elsewhere on these threads.

That still leaves open the question, what was the (uninstalled) security
update supposed to do...

Thank you, Thank you! Ater tearing my hair out all weekend over the same
problems (can't open from my documents, can't save, can't get drop down to
work, etc - even system restore would not work.) I somehow found this
discussion site. I removed update 908531 & everything seems to be working
fine. I'm only minimally tech savy, so suggestions about editing my registry
makes my eyes glaze over, but this worked. What is up with Microsoft anyway
??!!

In my case, I could no longer open up my address book to send faxes and
it took me 3 days to figure out the problem. I kept using the system
restore option of microsoft and that worked and then I noticed that
when update started to install the problem recurred again which is
when I came to the conclusion that it was the update that was
causing the problem.

When I removed the update the problem went away. I now have my computer
set not to receive updates automatically.

I reported the bug
online and this is the reply I got from the service technician:

I understand you have identified a bug in Security update and you would like to report this bug.

I recommend that you contact the Microsoft Product Support Services team to submit a report with regard to the bug
you have identified in Security update. You may contact them by calling (800) 642-7676.
Representatives in this team are available 24 hours a day.

I reported this to one of the technicians and he said he would report it to his superiors. You
have to be very patient when reporting because they first ask you questions they read from
a sheet and they treat you as if the problem is probably your fault. So you have to play the
game with them because they are just doing what they are told.

Well anyway lets see what happens now.
