The latest updates (not sure which of the 14 just yet) keep explorer from
starting after re-boot. (NOT iexplorer...)
I can open programs via Task Manager... but no task bar, no icons, just my
desktop wallpaper. There is also a svchost process sucking up cpu cycles for
some reason. Oh, and the machine boots incredibly fast... just can't use it...
If I roll back (via System restore,) whammo, back to normal without the
latest updates. Event logs show no exceptions. Explorer just can't seem to
start.
Anyone else? Any ideas?

Have you tried a "regsvr32 shdocvw.dll" already on your secret Windows
version?

Sorry; winxp sp2

registering the dll noted below makes no difference.

Hm, do you have the exact error message for us? Have a look into the
Event Log (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc).

Ive rebuilt the string tables, for fun...
But still running into the same problems, if I load the updates (which seems
to go fine) and reboot.... machine starts up very quickly, doesn't load all
services or programs and explorer cannot be started (or rather it'll start
very briefly, flash the task bar and then quit without an exception)
I can start

Well, those aren't (directly) related to explorer.exe crashes.

Ah, that's different from *crashes* of explorer.exe!

Have you tried to disable *all* entries in the "System Start" tab of
msconfig and *all* Non-Microsoft services in the "Services" tab of
msconfig (Start -> Run -> msconfig) and a reboot afterwards?
See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 as short reference for that.
Make sure, you have enabled the Windows Firewall in case you have a
third party Firewall software installed before going online!

Bye,
Freudi

Disabling services and start-up items has had no effect.
