I had similar problems with ms updates and office updates. The general rule
is to try and download the updates manually.
First I came across this command line to reset an important dll from this
site I didnt save the link, but I found it while looking for KB890830
Place the following in the Run window
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\MSXML3.DLL
This helped get past the Malicious software update problem

But of course the windows validation tool is the key component. I tried the
web version which has a Validate button, Everything validated but my udpates
were still failing. Once I downloaded the tool the updates installed
correctly.
