Win xp-sp2

I have just attempted to down the Malicious Software removal Tool that comes
out evry month about this time.
It seems to download OK but will not Install for some reason!

There is no error code and nothing appears in the download history either so
I am stumped as to what the problem could be.
I haven't changed anything on the PC since last month....but I can't seem to
get ANY updates to install and am not really savvy enough to hack around
trying to fix them.
Is there a problem here?

Same here. I think you will find that even though Update thinks the
packages were downloaded, they were not. At least, I can't find them
in the usual places.

The bummer is that there is no error code offered, just the message
that a problem on my machine prevented the package from being
installed. I have no doubt that is the case, but I have no clue as to
what the problem might be.

I asked the automatic update if there were any updates I needed and it gave
me 4

1) Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB823353)

2) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2006 (KB890830)

3) Office XP Service Pack 3

4) Security Update for Windows XP (KB914798)

so I downloaded them and when they went to install - they failed.
so I went to click of the status button like they said to see why they
didn't install and it doesn't work. About 6 months ago, I installed SP2 and
my PC crashed, so after being told to reinstall everything including SP2, it
crashed again, so I was told to not install SP2 and it has worked and haven't
had a problem since - did install SP1 and was advised that SP2 was buggy and
to stay away from it. Now it's starting to act buggy again and don't really
know why! I'm starting to wave to white flag again!!!!!!

My updates (a little different) are:
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)
Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)

Same problem. Windows One Care and Windows Auto Updates actually were trying
to download them at the same time last night. I have gone through the
download / install process multiple times and now it says I have them
downloaded but they need to install. I watched them download last night, but
they still fail everytime on install. Defender definition passed and
installed right the first time but it still reinstalls it every time I go to
update.

As far as SP2 being buggy... I havent had a problem with it in a while now
and I have it on 6 machines. This so far is only happening on one machine...
the only MS difference I can pinpoint? Windows One Care. None of my other
machines have that installed.

Update: I just ran Windows Update on my main PC and it did the validation
tool for the 50th time (this is really getting old guys) and then
successfully downloaded but failed installation. Thats 2/2 computers that
failed... this is not our problem, this is on Microsoft's end. I know my
systems are working just fine.

I have the same problem. Three of the four Updates installed okay but
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756) did not. It ran and ran and locked
up my computer. I had to power off to shut it down. I emailed Micorsoft and
am waiting for a reply. Does anyone have a solution?

Same problem. I have been reading other threads with update problems, and
there doesn't seem to be a fix.

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition Ver 2002 with Service Pack 2
installed. I have Office 2003 installed and the updates are:

Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)
Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)

They continue to fail after repeated tries.

Surely with as much trouble this is giving everyone, Microsoft would have a
fix. How about it, anyone from Microsoft monitoring these newsgroups?

I experienced problems myself, but the scenario was a touch different.

First off I am running WinXP SP2 with all the most recent updates
successfully installed, except for the 'Security Update for Excel 2003
(KB905756)'.

I think I know why this might have happened to me, but I cannot say the
same for others. It may very well be similar or not so I won't state it
with 100% certainty.

When I clicked onthe Updates install icon, I first had to tell my
'SurfinGuard Pro' [sandbox software from FinJan] to allow the install.
I then got a warning from SpySweeper that MSIEXEC.EXE was installing a
BHO. It asked me if I wanted to allow it. I told it no.

So I'm thinking that perhaps this selection of NO to the install of the
BHO stalled out the WIndows update for this item.

Maybe it pertains, maybe not.

As much as I hated to do it, I backed up all my documents, uninstalled Office
2003 and then reinstalled everything. Updated Office (ad nauseum), and this
time the security updates worked. Seems like alot of work for the updates.
Hoping that the next update will not give me any trouble.

I had similar problems with ms updates and office updates. The general rule
is to try and download the updates manually.

First I came across this command line to reset an important dll from this
site I didnt save the link, but I found it while looking for KB890830

Place the following in the Run window
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\MSXML3.DLL
This helped get past the Malicious software update problem

Windows Malicous ... tool ( KB890830
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

But of course the windows validation tool is the key component. I tried the
web version which has a Validate button, Everything validated but my udpates
were still failing. Once I downloaded the tool the updates installed
correctly.
Genuine Windows Validation Diagnostic
info at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892130

download at:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Windows Malicous ... tool ( KB890830
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

I hope this helps...
