Latest Vista update causes 100% CPU usage

I loaded the latest critical updates on 4/3 on my Vista Ultimate machine and
they've rendered the machine virtually useless. After booting up I'm seeing
100 CPU usage and it's next to impossible to try to do anything on it. I did
a system restore back 24 hours prior to loading these updates, then unplugged
the network cable so it couldn't download and automatically install these
again. I let it sit for 4 hours idle to do anything it needed to do, but I'm
still sitting here waiting 20 minutes for Quicken to load. Right now,
flattening this machine and going back to Win XP is looking quite
appealing...

The frustating part is that I just wiped this machine clean last weekend and
installed Vista from scratch. The only stuff on it right now is Spysweeper,
eTrust AV, Office 2003, Quicken 2007, Turbotax and the Realtek AC'97 drivers
(Version 3.99). All of this stuff was working just fine until I loaded those
updates last night.

Hi Kevin,

RealTek has new drivers as of 3-30-07 here:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

There is a patch for RealTek HD audio and the new updates - for XP (I could
not find one for Vista...) There seems to be a few problems....

Hope that helps?

I'll give that that new RealTek driver a try. Thanks for the heads-up.
