Tomorrow Mac OSX Leopard will be released and when i see the videos, i think
how microsoft, the biggest software company can release this slow, ugly,
unfinished operating system, Mac OSX look like a mature product, with a lot
of featured than should be in windows vista, Mac OSX is very more friendly
than vista and more closer to Longhorn concept than vista.... if Mac OSX
could be run in a PC i don't think twice...

I feel dissapointed again... Learn from Mac and give us a good product

I'm a .NET Programmer, Windows User about ten years...

Well, everyone is free to think what they want about Windows, but bashing
without thorough research and analysis is not the right approach. I think
Leopard is a solid upgrade that offers some nifty features, I personally
like Quick Preview, Time Machine and improvements to the Finder. Time
Machine is really cool because of inviting user interface and the visual
cues it gives users and the 123 approach to getting persons to backup.

Reading about it now"

I can't give any comment on the Mac/Windows debate. Macs are a niche
market here in South Africa, and are notoriusly expensive (Assuming
we're lucky enough to even find a retailer that stocks Mac hardware). So
I've never used a Mac.

As I'm always looking for something new to learn, I'd like to see a
version of Mac OSX that will run on my current hardware, even if only to
be able to gauge which is more suitable to a particular task.

From what I heard from someone running the BETA, Leopard is not finished!
Lots of unfixed bugs. No, I hope MS learns anything from Apple. Leopard is
still OSX. They're releasing an upgrade and charge people for it. What a
scam!

The software biz is based on the Gillette razor business model.

What's that?

Sell the Rube a razor, but also sell him the blades. While you make
some money on the initial sale of the razor, the real profit is made
selling new blades for the razor over and over. Other technology
companies have employed the same trick the decades. For example Kodak,
years back it had a profitable business selling both cameras and film.
Take Xerox and other photocopy machines. The real money in laser
printers is supplying the toner. Ditto for ink jet printers. They now
almost give away the printer knowing they will reap absurd profits
selling replacement ink at grossly inflated prices.

While software companies can make a bundle with some new application
much of the profit generated from sales is offset by development
costs. Making upgrades on a regular basis is far more profitable since
the lion's share of development costs is already paid off.

While I can't prove it I've suspected for a long time many
applications are deliberately crippled where some features are held
back and slowly added over the course of several upgrade cycles.
Either that or software engineers are an awfully dumb bunch since
often it appears what gets added in upgrades should have been thought
of for the initial version. Just call me a cynic. ;-)

You just need to look in the right places.

Psst: Microsoft wrote most of the code that runs on a Mac.

If time machine works as stated in that articale then it is not a safe
backup program.
Murphy says that you will lose power or crash the machine in the middle of a
backup not execute a controlled shutdown.
What happens then.. the file systems might be corrupted to start with and
you lose your backup.
If it is going to work you need more than one external disk and you need to
keep them in step even though they must never be connected at the same time.
It doesn't look like time machine does that so it is not a primary backup.
BTW I use Memeo on my PC and it does a similar function without the graphics
and to external network locations.

Mac OS X uses a Journaled file system which is designed for such scenarios
you mentioned.
