live 365,Napster.I want to transfer old VHS family tapes to DVD.I have a
Gateway multimedia computer running Vista and I can't even view the VHS
tape.I connected the VCR to the front input of the Gateway GM5664.

Do you have a tuner in that computer?

You must have a S-Video or Composite Video input to play/record VHS tapes.

Or at much lower quality, you can configure the tuner for Cable without the
set top box and tune to channel 3 or 4 depending on your VCR. If your VCR
has a RF output.

If you use the S-Video or Composite Video input in Media Center, you must
also have the IR remote hardware. (Media Center will not use the Video
input without the IR hardware).

You will probably have to run the Media Center tuner setup to change to the
Video input.

There is 3rd party software (from the tuner manufacter) that allows video
input.

There are USB Video capture devices and software that work also.

I found some specs on your PC that stated that it had a Video Capture
capability but I could find nothing in the user's manual for using it.
After connecting your VHS output to the video input connector on the front
of the unit and starting to play the VHS what application(s) on the PC were
you trying to use to watch/capture it?

I saw nothing in the specs to imply that the Video capture application in
your PC was part of MC. It may be part of Media player or Movie Maker or it
may be a separate Gateway supplied video capture application.

The user's manual that came with your PC or which is on a CD that came with
your PC may contain info about the video capture feature even though the
online user manual I found did not.
