Left folfers after update on external HDD

After finish the update and reboot the system, I noticed that a new created
folder was left in the root directory of the external HDD.
Under this folder, there are two sub-folders (amd64 and i386), with the next
files in each sub-folders:

filterpipelineprintproc.dll
msxpsdrv.cat
msxpsdrv.inf
msxpsinc.gpd
msxpsinc.ppd
mxdwdrv.dll
xpssvcs.dll

It was a big update, because it was done to a computer that was not being
used for a very long time, and the external disc was connected during the
update process.
The running system is Windows XP (SP3).
Can I delete these folders manually from the external HDD?

Thank you for your help.

Although the updates are being downloaded to SoftwareDistribution, the temp
location they are being run from is on
the drive with the most free space, in your case the external HDD.

Yes you can delete it. Next time, just leave the external HDD disconnected
when doing updates.

TaurArian,

Could you please elucidate on that? (I have the same problem except I
installed to a netbook over my network.) If the drive is disconnected NEXT
time I do an install, how will that help me delete the CURRENT instance of
filterpipelineprintproc.dll. etc.

Many thanks in advance.

I assume you are referring to
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b/951847/en-us

Known issues
Issue 1
After you install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 in Windows XP or Windows Server
2003, there is an arbitrary folder that is generated in the root of drive C.
This folder contains two subfolders that are named amd64 and i386. These two
subfolders both include the following files:
a.. Filterpipelineprintproc.dll
b.. Msxpsdrv.cat
c.. Msxpsdrv.inf
d.. Msxpsinc.gpd
e.. Msxpsinc.ppd
f.. Mxdwdrv.dll
g.. Xpssvcs.dll
These files were pending to be deleted from the XPSEPSC installation.

Resolution
To resolve this issue, delete the folder manually.

Yes, sorry for not making it clear which issue I was asking about. The
problem is that one cannot manually delete the folders. The problem is
pervasive as there are a ton of posts on it, but no one has yet come up with
an answer that doesn't require very high technical skills. Indeed the tools
to do this may be entirely lacking from systems like XP Home. The unresolved
error that everyone is hitting is that when you try to delete the folders
manually you receive this error message:

Cannot delete filterpipelineprintproc.dll: Access is Denied.
Make sure that disk is not full... etc.

I've even tried booting in SAFE mode, but the problem remains. If you can
solve this in a way that non-technophiles can accomplish, you will be a hero
to many!

Thanks again,

Stu
