Legacy Games - Magic Compatibility

I could not install Magic: the Gathering by MicroProse on my XP machine.. I
hoped things would be easier on my Vista machine. So far, no luck.
I have tried using properties/compatability tab on the set up file and the
resulting executable/application files.
I receive the pop-up box "Magic: the Duel has stoped working, Windows is
searching for a solution" which ends with a box that ends the app and says
that Windows will notify if a solution is found.
Please advise how I can play this great but old game on Vista; I hate to see
great legacy games die.

Hi,

I've got a load of old Windows 95/98 games too so I feel your pain

If it won't work on XP it almost certainly won't work on Vista either.

However, there is a solution if you have access to a Windows 98 or ME
installation cd......

If you go to Microsoft's website and download 'Virtual PC 2007', you can
install a copy of Windows 98/Me inside Vista. This will let you run any
pre 2001 program without the worry about compatibility.

You can even run XP in the Virtual PC if you want but in my experience
the graphical settings are a bit too basic to run modern games well.

Lee.

Keep in mind though Virtual PC 2007 only emulates an old Trident Trio video
card which has extremely limited 3d capibilities, so even if you have a
Geforce 8800, Virtual PC only emulates a really old video card. This is only
really an issue with 3D Games, if the games you want to run are truely old,
then you might still be ok.

Good point! - probably explains why it's probably not the solution for
XP games that won't work on Vista.

However, I think it's worth a try on Windows 95/98 games that aren't
compatible with XP. It certainly works well on point and click
adventures (Discworld II springs to mind) and hopefully it'll be able to
cope with games like Magic: The Gathering.
