Lexmark X1180 does not print

Have installed latest drivers etc from Lexmark site for X1180 all-in-one. It
scans just fine. But it wil not print or copy, error message says device is
not connected. Looking for ideas, thanks.

Before installing the Vista drivers, did you first disconnect your printer
from the PC and uninstall the old drivers and any related software?

Yep, followed the instructions to the letter - have done it several times to
"make sure"! What I find strange is that scan works, so the device must
presumably be connected OK. Why would the print function then say "device not
connected"?
